(poem) the devil went down to cnn

i was walking
through acid plains and ghost-filled
weapons dump facilities
when out jumped the devil
and he wore a turban
and had ice for eyes
and fire sprang from his mouth
to engulf the land.
my children were consumed
by the awful fear of something alien
and demonic
and inhuman
and unnatural.
they screamed as they melted
- but i didn't scream.
i smiled.
because god's angels in all their glory
wrapped comforting wings around their souls
and carried them in golden baskets
to the precious metal gates of heaven
where the lord's advertising
is all that's seen between football plays.
i shall believe
that the devil will fall
to my nation's wrath.
i shall believe
that the theme music played
and the "cut" yelled by the director
and the cries for "make-up"
between each fiery burst from
the devil's bloody maw
are propaganda,
and that the devil
exists, just as i saw him
while i was walking
through acid fields
and ancient weapons dump facilities
on that night
when the weather was warm
and i had lost my remote
and the tv was tuned
to cnn.
