Are you using MAXXAUDIO PRO? I'm not sure about you configuration but I only use the windows native driver with Disable all enhancements checked off and there is no crackling, where as I had tried MaxxAudio Pro and it did create crackling. I hope this works for you.
Hello. If returning the laptop is a possibility, keeps an eye on the calendar. If you got the laptop directly from Dell, the brief return period may start from the date on the invoice, not from when you received it.
You can look at the Recent Issues FAQ to see what problems other owners have. The laptops are grouped by screen size, and within the groups by model name. I don't know the model of your laptop, but because it is an Inspiron 15 5000, look for Inspiron 55xx. If it is in the faq it will be in that group. The last 2 numbers (xx) define the exact model you have.
The faq might not fully reflect whether or not your is a known issue because I only included issues where the model name was given, accompanied by a solution or workaround. As to whether it is a Windows 10 or Realtek issue is hard to say. Noise used to be such a big issue that I had a separate faq just for noise, but then for several years we had almost zero complaints about noise. Then Dell started putting Realtek in its laptops about the same time that Windows started giving away 10, and the noise complaints came back. That's when I started the Recent Issues -- "recent" meaning in relation to the original noise faq.
I suspect that Microsoft created the problems with the way Windows handles audio, with the understanding that the audio vendors would address the issues within the audio drivers, but that Realtek, which has inordinately complex drivers, is struggling with it. To complicate matters, Win10 is not a fixed OS but is constantly evolving or devolving making it a moving target. But all of that is just idle speculation. Probably will never know for sure.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).
2. Expand the "Sound, Video & Game Controllers" section.
3. Right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio" and select to uninstall.
4. Put a check mark in the option to delete the driver software, and then ok.
5. Restart the laptop.
When the laptop boots up, it will look for Realtek files. If none found then it will install the native driver. If an earlier version of a Realtek driver had been downloaded then its files could still be in the laptop and Windows would install that version of the Realtek, not the native driver. So after step 5, go back to the Device Manager and check again for a Realtek driver. Keep uninstalling & restarting until "Realtek" no longer appears under Sound...Controllers. If you see "High Definition Audio Device" that is the native driver, although in Win10 it can have a different name.
Even if the native driver eliminates the crackling, the sound might be worse because it lacks the sophisticated Waves program that Realtek uses to enhance the audio. To get back the Realtek driver you have to download and install a fresh copy from your model's support page. I can link to the page but need to know the model.
Another thing that helped some people is to get a driver directly from Realtek's site, rather than the Dell-supplied one. To get one direct from the Realtek site,
1.Go to the Realtek downloads selection page.
2. On the page click on "High Definition Audio Codecs".
3. Check "I accept" and then "next".
4. (optional) In the column named "Description" find the file named README and download it. That has the instructions for installing or updating.
5. In the column named "Description" select your operating system and whether it is 32bits or 64bits from the top 2 choices in the list.
6. In the column named "Download" click on one of the server names to download the driver.

Hello,I have trouble getting sound playback on firefox (checked 85.0 and 78.7.0esr both 64 bit) on windows 10.I checked sound on youtube, and netflix.I checked other applications like spotify and mpv, and soundplayback there is fine. Also it works on Firefox nightly (87.0a1).
What i have already tried:- restarting my computer- opening windows volume mixer and see if firefox is muted- updating my audio driver- different playback devices (Device over HDMI and Line out)- reinstalling firefox- uninstalling firefox, delete folders in C:\Users\$username\AppData\Local C:\Users\$username\AppData\Roaming- new install with fresh downloaded installer- restart to safe mode
I was able to solve the problem. Windows 10 seems not having just one volume mixer for applications. There is one at right click volume icon open volume mixer and there is an other one at settings -> sound -> advanced sound options -> App volume and device preferences.
there was the output of mozilla firefox set to "blank" instead of "Default". You cannot set this to blank with the gui yourself some something must have happend in the past, that caused this preference to go to "blank". Also reinstalling the application seems not to reset the settings made in this particular preference page.
Look at the current tab in Firefox (the Youtube or Netflix one with no sound) (See images below). Right click it and if it says "Unmute tab" your tab is muted and select it to allow sound again, or just click the icon directly. The icon will change to a colored icon to indicate it's unblocked. A colorless, crossed out sound icon indicates the tab is muted. It's easy to accidentally click the icon and mute it. Shortcut Ctrl+M also mutes it.
I added this answer because it's not obvious anywhere in Firefox, other than the tab bar. I drove myself crazy looking for the problem even though I am a repair technician. It's easy to miss. The third image shows the icon after the video has been played. See how similar it is to the muted icon?

So I recently got a used pair of 1st gen Airpods and they've worked on my phone perfectly (iPhone SE) but when I'm using my Windows laptop (ASUS Zenbook) and connect them to my laptop through Bluetooth, Spotify won't play through the Airpods. The sound will instead be played by the speaker of the laptop. This isn't the case however when I play any other audio from another application like Chrome and Netflix. I've also made sure that when connecting my Airpods it says "Connected voice, music" and that when I click on the sound icon it says above "Headphones (Airpods Stereo)" as the output for the sound. Is there anything I'm missing or a setting that doesn't allow the desktop app of Spotify to play through Bluetooth?
Another thing you can try is checking if Spotify is muted under Windows sound mixer (right-click on speaker icon again, select volume mixer). You can also try checking if muting and unmuting Spotify and then restarting the client will change anything.
This worked for me, but only after I tried a different mouse. It was clear the wireless mouse was the problem because the sound behaved fine once the receiver was unplugged. Other web sites suggested driver problems, but this one is simple to check. Thanks.
What did, is opening the volume control by simply clicking the icon in the tray, controlling it randomly with the arrow buttons (just a few presses), then PRESSING ENTER. A notification sound or whatnot came, and its working fine since.
Just me again, 3 weeks later. I just about threw my laptop out the window when the problem re-appeared.
But this time I knew it HAD to be either the USB receiver, the wireless mouse, or the wireless keyboard.
I had a spare (my old one) so from there it was easy to troubleshoot the issue.
Unbelievable! This worked for me for one week so far and no problem with the sound sliding down to zero. I was at my wits end wondering if I needed a new computer, that the problem was internaI. So I did what you said to do and why not try everything. I now unplug the mouse when I am off of the computer and plug it in after the log on is complete when I log on and it has been working. Thanks Folks for heading me in the right direction. I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with a thumbwheel on the front of it to control the volume. Which, by the way, I never use. So after reading the various posts and trying to decide which solution to try, I remembered that this thumbwheel was there. So I rotated it a couple of times and now the volume seems stable and that little floater is gone.
YEE-HAW just got this problem on my device. Actually a really quick fix is to drag the volume all the way up then click on the video screen really fast before the sounds goes mute and it will lock the sound at the point you click depending on how fast you draw, lol. Geez rebooting my device that sounds like work to me but if that`s what it takes, i guess maybe one fine day i will. I beat up my mouse the other day because it was behaving bad so i knew from this the mouse was the culprit. I have a nimble little Logitech mouse from maybe 2012 and i love it so i don`t really know why i abused it. The on screen scrolling feature works but i have to try many times before it registers. The actual mouse wheel indeed only works on some pages. Cheers from Norway for all you nosy pricks out there.
