I dont know about the rest of you ...
But...
I am waiting patiently for the word of the day...
Trying to expand my horizons....

Hi Gene,

Sorry, I had some real world work to get done... jajaja.  Give me a theme and I'll start popping out words that interest you plus I'll get the index up-to-date later today as well.

Thanks,

Sam

Sorry Gene,

I don't pay much attention to either these days... ninguno eventos de actualidads ni las últimas noticias.  Especially so for la epidemia.  I've already got those sorts of things figured out in my head and am wise enough to know that me fretting about one thing out of my control or another es un ejercicio fútil.  Please pick a more interesting topic, por favor, ¿con azúcar en la boca?

la heladería

ice cream parlor

EXAMPLES

¿Te apetece algo frío? Hay una heladería cerca de aquí.

Do you feel like having something cold? There's an ice cream parlor nearby.

La heladería regaló helados para celebrar su apertura.

The ice cream parlor gave away ice cream for free to celebrate the opening.

Gene,

That's a nice one!  I added it to the Spanish Word of the Day Index for future word archeologists to find...  That takes us to 48 Spanish Word definitions/posts in 41 days (since June 30th.)  Of course there is a lot of great discussion following many of the Spanish Word of the Day posts.  We are creating a nice Spanish Word reference with a dash of Costa Rican flavor.  I probably should alphabetize that index or start breaking it down by leading letter (or something?) to make it easier to use.

Thanks for keeping my feet to the fire (apretar las tuercas, torcerle el brazo, les hacer responsable) as well as tossing one out there!

Uno más…tenerle a alguien contra las cuerdas

Thanks, Christopher!  Those are some good ones...  I've put all these dichos meaning, "to put pressure on someone," all together in this one post to make them easier to find and I'll link to this post in the Spanish Word of the Day Index under the Phrases section.

Spanish phrases that mean to put pressure on someone:

  • apretar las tuercas - tighten the nuts
  • torcerle el brazo - twist his arm
  • les hacer responsable - hold them responsible
  • apretarle las clavijas - tighten the pegs
  • poner entre la espada y la paredput between a rock and a hard place
  • tenerle a alguien contra las cuerdashave someone on the ropes
If anyone has any others to add, just let me know and I'll edit this post to hold whatever we come up with.

Thanks,

Sam
