Gene,

I don't think any of Costa Rica's six "active" volcanos are spewing lava right now.  There
are 6 considered active due to geothermic activity and 61 considered dormant or extinct.
The active ones are:

Arenal, Poas, Rincón de la Vieja, Irazú, Tenorio/Miravalles, & Turrialba

Not sure why Tenorio and Miravalles get lumped together except that I think Tenorio
and Miravalles are sister volcanos and perhaps fall into the same protected zone.

Of those 7 I've made it to the top of 3 of them.  Rincón de la Vieja is the one I really want
to explore next.  I think that might be one of the hidden gems in Costa Rica.  I know there
are some wonderfully unknown waterfalls and excellent swimming holes hidden up in them
thar hills!  Plus it has a boiling lake...  ;-)

In lieu of a lava spew, I know you live near Miravalles, did you see the wildfire raging up
its slopes just the other day?

Let us know if you figure out the closest lava flow.  It has been a few years for me as well.

Thanks,

Sam

Thanks sam....

I made a trek on foot up concepcion..
Also marivalles..
On both i did not make the top...
But still very satisfying for me...

Poas was spewing sulpher last time i was there...lots of steam..

Yes i saw the scars from the blaze on the mountain...

I also one day counted 11 fires in the zone fron the highest point in the main road to guayabo..

Also..a young man that lives fairly close was caught setting a few of those...evidently he was bored or so the story goes...

Interesting...

The best volcano spewing right now is def Turialba . . . . I have a bunch of the recent spews here: https://www.facebook.com/pg/PuraVidaHotel/posts/  . . . a day trip (only on clear blue days) to the park (actual park is closed) but the spew view can be amazing on some days and then take the evacuation route over to Irazu (4WD only)  Berni

Gene,

I don't think Turrialba is spewing molten lava, but just steam and ash, with the
occasional chunk bigger than ash.  Probably not much to see at night unless it
is a full moon night which might actually be pretty neat!  ;-)

I think Berni's clear day advisory might be important.  I drove by there to see
what I could see when it was spewing ash on San José and all I could see was
nothing but fog!

I took the northern road out of Cartago towards Cipreses which goes by the
Monumento Nacional Guayabo and comes into Turrialba city from the north
rather than the west.  Pura Neblina, it was!  As I recall they had the entrance
to the Guayabo Monument closed due to the volcano spewing as well.  I was
on the way to visit family in Limón and I did get to see the blue sky steam spew
the next morning from our front port in Limón province.  If you haven't been to
the top of Irazú, that's right in that area and you can drive pretty much to the
crater (okay a small walk from the parking lot.)

Take sweaters!  The last time we went to the top of Irazú it was so cold I had
to hike back to the car to bring out a blanket or two so we could sit on the
rim for a bit.

Gene,

Someone from CRL just sent me an update on v. Turrialba:

The park is still closed and unfortunately you need to be there EARLY to see
it out of clouds in this season.  It has been much more active lately, up to 1km up.

Here's a current view from one of the webcams:

I wasn't kidding about neblina!  ;-)

Here are the 2 webcams on Turrialba:

The park has been closed for years . . . but you do not need to go in the park if there is a good eruption going and yes we leave very early when we do a tour there . . . only works on 100% clear days at 5:30am :-))

No for the night trip you might as well drive off a cliff nearer you . . . .the only days it works are total clear blue sky, best as early as possible and during an actual eruption which happens most weeks but not continuously.  Here's a couple of pics from one we did . . .

Beautiful pics Berni!

> No for the night trip you might as well drive off a cliff nearer you . . . .

I got a belly laugh out of that one.  ;-)

One of the 2 times I came close to doing that, okay maybe of the 3 times I cam close to doing that, I was coming back from a trip to Limón province on a nice sunny day so we decided to take the San Miguel to Heredia shortcut via Cinchona just a little bit after the wipeout.  It was an interesting drive, and as so many adventures like this begin, I had to drive around road-blocks to start...  ;-)  We spent a little too much time at the waterfall, at one point on a switchback I could see the road was missing a bit of the underhanging cliff as we climbed back up the mountain from the waterfall, but I put my trust in 4x4 and hugged the cliff side as we rushed over the scary part.  We stopped at the Peace lodge to use the bathrooms.  Later (I think?) we picked through the rubble of the soda and took pictures.  All went well, albeit a bit slow and taking a lot longer than we should have.  We took pics of the destroyed fabrica El Ángel and as we got past all the super bad stuff and started coming into what is probably part of the Valle Central, we saw a bunch of true hard-core peace lilies growing on the slopes.  So as the sun was setting we scrambled to grab some to transplant in our garden.  One of my nieces came screaming down off the slope with bats chasing her...  ;-)  Of course with night-fall it started raining and it got all foggy before we got off the mountain.  It was THICK fog and I could not even see the road directly in front of me while driving.  The road was all dirt, no paint, no reflectors.  Finally I found it best to turn off my head-lights so I could see a little bit of moon-light reflecting off the mud puddles while driving.  I had my wife (passenger-side) keep her door open so we could tell if I was getting too close to the edge of the cliff while we worked our way back down off the mountain.  Two people in the back of my trusty Galloper were so scared they were crying.  We made it and I think I mostly decided to stop taking crazy chances after that drive.  It was the first time I've ever been so happy to see the ugly back streets of Heredia.  I think it was one of those getting back to Guanacaste way after midnight trips.  I don't do those any more.

Thanks for dredging up fond memories, Berni!  jajaja
