I was looking for a word in Spanish I could use for "seedlings" better than "bebés" or "brotas" or "plantitas" or "plantínes" or even worse "plantónes".  I like this "plántulas" word and plan to use it going forward.  Of course nobody I asked had ever heard of "plántulas", "plantínes", or "plantónes" before -- all of which you can find in the Real Academia Española (RAE) Diccionario de la lengua española (DLE).  Everyone said "bebés" or when pressed, "plantitas", except for one person who suggested "brotas".

I've got plántulas of 12+ different kinds of chiles getting close to transplant size including: chiles congo, de arból, jalapeños, panameños, gallenas, cayenas, habaneros, scotch bonnets, serranos, poblanos, picos de pájaro, cascabeles, and ajíes amarillo peruano.  And so naturally mis plántulas come up in conversation...  jajaja.
