LiCR,

As many of you undoubtedly know, today is one of Costa Rica's somewhat unique holidays:

Día de la Abolición del Ejército / Army Abolition Day

It is no longer a paid day off for employees (I think since 2020) but today is the 75th anniversary of president José Figueres Ferrer, in an emotional and symbolic act in the Bellavista Barracks, knocking down one of the walls of the barracks with a few blows of a sledgehammer, as he declared the National Army abolished in Costa Rica.

For those of you on Facebook, the Biblioteca Nacional de Costa Rica will have a livestream at 3:00 PM called, "El Pacto de Concordia: primera constitución de Costa Rica."

Biblioteca Nacional Costa Rica

Starting at 6:00 PM, the National Theater commemorates the Abolition of the Army with the presentation of “Concierto para Costa Rica” with a piano duet from Tanya Cordero and Yekaterina Kamneva

Teatro Nacional Costa Rica

At 7:00 PM there will be a special concert for the Abolition of the Army which I believe will be broadcast on Facebook and Youtube:

Banda de Conciertos de Cartago

Banda de Conciertos de Cartago

Also the Ministerio de Cultura y Juventud has a nice webpage explaining the holiday and the events that led to it here:

Conozca la historia de la Abolición del Ejército en Costa Rica

Perhaps this day will give hope to some in despair about the current state of wars raging in our world.

Que pueda ser igual por el mundo entero......but that is so unrealistic as to not warrant any discussion.  It's just one of many things that makes Costa Rica one of the world's happiest countries😅
