Disclaimer: My family voted for the other (losing) party's candidate for president, perhaps that is why I'm interested in learning more about what the incoming administration is all about... ;-)
To me it wasn't such a big surprise that the PAC candidate won this election even though they came in 2nd in round one. In round 1, where Fabricio and the PRN came in 1st, the two more established parties PAC and PLN came in 2nd and 3rd respectively. In round 2, where we only had the 1st and 2nd place candidates from round 1, the PAC and PLN voters rallied around the PAC candidate and combined to defeat the PRN candidate who beat both PAC and PLN in round 1. Them's the breaks. Being the new party trying to make more radical changes is a tough gig.
The
PLN party is an affiliate of
Socialist International and leans towards liberalism and social democracy. You may remember that the last PLN presidential candidate was the Mayor of San José who dropped out due to running out of money. He was kicked out of the PLN due dropping out being unconstitutional... That lead to the current president Solis winning by a landslide.
The
PAC party is an affiliate of the
Progressive Alliance which was formed as a alternative to the Socialist International group by former members. The PAC leans towards social democracy and progressivism.
The
PRN party is a right-wing conservative party leaning to conservatism and the Christian right. So obviously, the PLN and PAC parties are natural "political enemies" of the PRN party. Together their forces combined to defeat the PRN forces. In hindsight it seems to have been a pretty predictable outcome. Them's the breaks! ;-)
