Good morning....
I am thinking of a new project...a solar electric gate for my finca...
Anybody know where to start??

Gene,
Building a linear actuator out of drill and screw-rod plus a panel charging a battery
might work pretty well with a simple remote... Something like this? An electric
window motor would be easier (12VDC) to work with and would be nicely geared
for this.
Everything easy to find in Costa Rica -- especially if you've got a nice neighbor with
an extra panel or two I might be able to donate to the cause... ;-) Or maybe it is
time to split that pallet of panels on the slow boat I've mentioned in the past. Last
I checked it was 0% import duty on solar stuff (although I never verified that officially.)

Got all mechanical up and running...
Just need to order solar panel with controller for charging battery (60 bucks on amazon...
Then a remote...also 30 bucks or so ...
I am sooo cheap!!!

That looks very nice! Can't wait to see the pics with your security device
in place to protect that shiny new battery from evildoers! Your boy do the
welding on that? Or 50-50? Looks downright sturdy! jajaja.

Battery will be welded in place...not bolted...
I have a metal structure over it now to protect from rain

I have rebar welded over battery...
Can only be removed with grinder...
Nuts/bolts are tack welded...can not be unscrewed...
When i wire in solar charger and remote control...i will weld the end of the housing i made from 1/16 sheet metal...
The housing is bolted on...can be removed...
I have a pulsating siren...will sound when gate activated...and will set to go off if housing is removed...
Got enough relays laying around to do that...

Yes...jerry and i welded it up...
He welded most..
I tacked it...
He finished it up when he got out of school!!!
