A vulcanologist at breakfast one morning told me, "we know about such things."  No they don't.

More volcanology - There are 163 Volcanoes in Costa Rica, someone assured me.

A couple of years back an article in our local rag struck me as funny . . . "they" discovered the 200th volcano in Costa Rica.  Made me wonder about losing such a thing for so long . . . so I did further research and found a researcher who insisted there were 116 volcanoes and some months later I found a University of Costa Rica professor (known personally by one of our expert naturalist guides) who assured us there were 162.

I now tell our guests we have 165 volcanoes in Costa Rica – I find that more satisfying.

More grossly MISunderestimated Volcano data.  Recently I was assured we had 199 volcanoes and by some amazing oversight had missed one over the years bringing the total to 200.  I felt pretty good about that and so when a local tour guide assured me we had 300 volcanoes I asked him to prove it and of course he could not, while I could cite this “200th” in the online rag.  Some time ago we seem to have a recount from AM Costa Rica, they now say  "Costa Rica has 112 volcanoes, but the three around the Central Valley and Arenal are the best known to tourists. They are grossly underestimated. Each has the capacity to destroy the Central Valley."

So in summary nobody has a friggin clue how many volcanoes we have.  I have made a public map of all the volcanoes I can find.  Can anyone on this board give me ONE more name of a volcano for this map?  https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VhqMiB698kCcQ81-PWNNq614by8&usp=sharing

Please?  Berni

There appear to be 13 volcanoes on that map; I've always heard there are are 12 in CR.  How did we suddenly get into the hundreds?  joe in volcano-free pavas

Many of them are very ancient, extinct volcanoes and are essentially unrecognizable as vocanoes since they are so eroded down and covered with forest or jungle that they look like little more than hills.  Cerro Chato south of Volcán Arenal looks like a hill but is really on old extinct, rounded-off cone.

And the impressive cone of Arenal was only about 2/3s of the size it is today when I first saw it back in 1976.  Or at least it seemed that way to me back then.  So not only do volcanoes wear down and shrink, but the active ones visibly grow, too.  It's just a matter of watching them long enough!

Cheers!

If you are able to search the archives of AM Costa Rica, a feat I never figured out, you will find multiple reports of above 160 but nobody seems to have ever made a list nor questioned the numbers touted . . .

Berni,

I'm guessing that you might wont to contact someone from OVISCORI and ask for a totlat number of volconos in the country.  Ask for active AND extinct to get a more informed number.  Hemos aquí el ligado a ellos:  [ http://www.ovsicori.una.ac.cr ]

Berni,

A couple of easy ones missing from your map:  Chato (little bro of Arenal) and La Giganta (little sis of Miravalles.) Also don't forget the 2 on Isla del Coco and some odd-ball volcanos up by Tortuguero.  That whole valley between Rincón y Miravalles is supposedly the ancient crater of a super-volcano that existed before Rincón or Miravalles which would have formed on what was its rim...  Officially (?) there's a map of 112 that Barquero & Sáenz put together in 1987 -- probably searching for more of their work would find better details (like names, and maybe more?)

Volcanes Costa Rica.png

A copy of this map it can be found in the Active Volcanos doc in OVSICORI's digital library: OVSICORI - Biblioteca Digital.  I've attached it to this message or you can find it as the last doc under Vulcanologia / Presentaciones here:

Berni,

I haven't been able to find this that everyone references:

Barquero-H J, Saenz-R R, 1987. Aparatos volcanicos de Costa Rica. Heredia, Costa Rica: OVSICORI-UNA, 1:750,000 map and volcano list.

But perhaps this would work better for your coffee table?  It has gazillions listed and bunches from Costa Rica and if you sneak through the Google Preview you can find them without dropping your wad.

Here we go!  At least the names of those 112 AND for bonus beans, contact info for the honorable Jorge Barquero himself!

Volcanes Activos de Costa Rica.png

Call my bud, Jorge!  HE is the Volcano man who walks the walk in Costa Rica...

Yeah, that's the ticket!!!  You'll have to add the 2 new digits to his phone #, but as they used to call my old friend, he is:

His word would be definitive in my book.

OK I have filled in the ones I can find from Volcanoes of Costa Rica in this google map: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VhqMiB698kCcQ81-PWNNq614by8&usp=sharing - so far I just did Guanacaste and Arenal areas.

Interesting - at least 60% of these are unknown to google maps as places with names or things people have ever thought of visiting or looking for?
Volcanoes such as Cerro Pelado y Delicias and Cerro Olla de Carne look almost like author's jokes when he got bored one day.  As for Cerro Perdido, well that says it all.

If any of you living near one of these spots can verify some of these are real at least according to locals?  Or are some of these just gone for good and no longer count as volcanoes?

Working on the rest . . . Berni

I was making such progress - I have plotted the approx locations of 41 volcanoes on this map: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VhqMiB698kCcQ81-PWNNq614by8&usp=sharing
Then all of a sudden I notice Google Maps has a mind of it's own and keeps translating all the Volcano names into English.  So Volcano Valle Hermoso becomes Volcano Beautiful Valley which is stupid.  Anyone know a simple way to stop Google maps doing silly things?

I found this discourse: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/48639020/google-maps-api-avoid-translation-of-name but it got my hed spinning?  Berni

Berni,

Are you sure it is not just your own local display options doing that?

When I look at your map all the labels show the proper names in Spanish, although I must have my settings currently set to use English because it shows Volcano in English after the names like "Arenal Volcano" and for other things like "La Fortuna Waterfall" and "Pura Vida Hotel".  This is on a Mac using Chrome.  I used to always run it in pure Spanish, but I think I changed it for some trade-show demos and forgot to change it back...

The map looks really good!

Hey Berni,

Try writing the entire volcano names in Spanish, with accents properly in place, i.e., 'Volcán Valle Hermoso' and placing them inside quotes, either single or double.  That may convince Google that you are writing in spanish and so Google will leave it the way you intend.

Just a thought...

¡Buena Suerte!

Cheers!

That's weird

Check out Volcan Olla de Carne!  And Los Chiles . . . . . Paul, your quotes idea did not work either . . . I added you to the editor list if you want to try another? https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VhqMiB698kCcQ81-PWNNq614by8&usp=sharing

I think it used to work and now stopped . . . if I enter a name, Google maps finds it with the correct Spanish name and then when I select the one from the list it shows me a translated name in the volcano list on the left but keeps the correct Spanish name on the map

e.g.

Sam, yours is working right . . . . actually as long as Sams is working and only my table is translating I think that is enough to proceed and finish the map . . . . Berni

so far the Barquero map is the only one so that means we are stuck with only 112 volcanoes and some of them look pretty dubious :-))

Hey Berni (et All),

Just FYI . . .

Just ran across this article in QCostaRica and thought it might

intrigue you just a little.  I was not at all surprised that I knew so

many of the names of the volcanoes in Costa Rica.  But I was rather

amazed at how many of the names of volcanoes which I knew from

the other Central American countries, especially those in Guatemala!

And poor Belize has ni un solo volcán to her name, alas.

Here's the article and a link to it:

The Volcanos Of Central America (By Country)

http://qcostarica.com/the-volcanos-of-central-america-by-country/

So Berni, how many more than those listed in this article for Costa

Rica have you found?  And were any of the ones listed in this article

for Costa Rica ones that you were not aware of already?

¡Pura Pómez!

Paul,
You have quite the memory!

Your article lists a measly 13
  1. Arenal – Active
  2. Barva
  3. Cerro Anunciación
  4. Cerro Tilarán
  5. Irazú – Active, the highest at an elevation of 3,432 meters
  6. Laguna Poco Sol
  7. Miravalles
  8. Orosí
  9. Platanar
  10. Poás – Active
  11. Rincón de la Vieja
  12. Tenorio
  13. Turrialba
So far using the public info from Sam/Barquero I have placed 51 volcanoes in their approximate GPS locations https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VhqMiB698kCcQ81-PWNNq614by8&usp=sharing - I did most of the northwest so far . . .

- another 50 and more to go . . . unfortunately I have no way to verify the Barquero info . . .

A work in progress, no time this week . . .  Berni
