Apologies if this has been asked before. Is there a way to use a 360 image, taken with a Ricoh Theta S or similar as a background?

Thanks

It will be possible soon, we are working on this feature.

Thanks, this is great news!  Couple of questions the first being the obvious "How soon is soon?" and the second will this extend to 360 videos? I'd love to make some Augmented animations with pupils.

"Soon" is either the end of March or the beginning of April.

No, there are no plans for you to be able to import 360 videos yet. However, you will be able to animate the 3D objects that you place into your 360° image with CoSpaces.

I am trying to upload a 360 image and am following the instructions on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOvr15jILjk&lc=z12vxfthvpfdxbzgd04cg1maqku1ercbpj4
But I do not see the "option to upload 360 image" after clicking on Environment.  I am using Google Chrome browser.

Hi,

in order to see the "Upload 360° photo"-button you need to upgrade to the PRO account. To do this you need to click on the green "Unlock Early Access"-button in the users menu. Here is an explanation on how to do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x-jdrwE7Ng

Hi, during Uploading a 360 image, I see my background does show gray area. Is there a way not to show? Please see gray area at attached. Thanks.

Hi,

if you see a grey area at the top of bottom of your photo-sphere it means that your 360 picture is not a spherical projection, but a cylindrical projection. This means that the top and bottom part of your picture does not exist to create a full photo-sphere, which causes the grey area.

Spherical panoramas (you can look fully up and down):
Width to height ratio is near 2:1, e.g. 6000x3000, 8000x4000, 9256x4628

Cylindrical panoramas (you cannot look fully up and down):
The width of the image is at least twice as many pixels as the height of the image, e.g. 6000x2500, 8000x3999, 7500x3000, 8888x4443

To fill the grey areas, you can either upload a 2:1 aspect ratio version of the picture or replace the grey area with other 3D items of your choice.

Cheers,
Stefan

Stefan, thanks for your comment.
I think my panorama pic is a cylindrical panoramas which I've made using google street view camera.
At this moment, I'll try to use my pic modified using pic editor with ratio you recommanded.
For future, I'll try to find app which will provide 360 panoramic image with proper ratio.

I now found I can take a spherical image using my google street view camera.
Function was already there though I didn't know it before.
I successfully took a  spherical image and uploaded on Cospaces.
Thanks again.

Having a 360 Photo as a background is very cool!
Can I also have it as an object? Like a spherical 3d object where I can walk around in, like in a room?

Hi Ulrich,

actually it's not really possible to "walk" inside an 360° image without having weird distortion effects because it's a 2D image. You can see this when you upload an 360° image in CoSpaces, placing a camera inside the scene and set "Use as main camera" to true. Then you can "walk" through it which leads to these distortion effects I mentioned before.

What is possible though is to use a 360° image as a "Skybox" similar to what you can see in this demo: https://threejs.org/examples/webgl_shaders_ocean.html
Is that what you mean? If not, can you please give me an example (video)? This feature must be implemented in CoSpaces though.

Thanks,
Benjamin
