Introduction.
A TECHNOLOGY allows one to ACHIEVE a PRACTICAL result quickly and
EFFICIENTLY.
PARADOX is the perfect CATALYST for ENLIGHTENMENT.
Paradox exists on the BOUNDARY of what IS and what IS NOT.
It forces a state of NO-MIND experiencing NO-THING.
It UNIFIES DUALITIES -- perceiving the FIGURE and GROUND
simultaneously.
A BOUNDARY is an INTERFACE between two realms and is the RICHEST in
COMPLEXITY.
The HYPNAGOGIC state, (SLEEP vs. WAKEFULNESS), is the most CREATIVE.
One must wade through this distracting clutter and find the POINT of
STILLNESS at the boundary.
Focused ATTENTION holds one at that POINT.
Zen LOGICAL PARADOX – a practical Enlightenment Technology.
Rinzai KOAN ZEN meditation is a logical PARADOX that TRAPS the mind in
a feedback LOOP trying to find an ANSWER to a DUALITY (which is
LOGICALLY impossible) freeing it to find its INTUITIVE TRUE NATURE.
Mokusho (Soto) NON-THOUGHT ZEN meditation is simply sitting in silence
allowing all thoughts to pass through without attachment.
Breath counting is sometimes used to focus the mind away from thought.

Ch'an or Zen Buddhism holds that Buddhism is ultimately beyond
philosophy, or the study of texts but is about the direct experience
of the ultimate reality achieved in zazen sitting meditation. Zen

The FEEDBACK loop between the SENSORY and MOTOR cortex established

creates a PHYSICAL PARADOX to focus and free the mind from suffering
through self-forgetting -- ENLIGHTENMENT.
The LONG-LOST SECRET of these methods is NOT to PRESS, but to just
BARELY FEEL, moment to moment, actively CORRECTING for the LOSS of
touch and for the ONSET of feeling -- one should be just at the
THRESHOLD of feeling.
This FEEDBACK with TIME DELAY creates an OSCILLATOR – settling at some
natural optimum frequency with MINIMAL amplitude, balancing on a
manifold between two states – like balancing a round pebble on top of
a saddle using minimal movement – this is the POINT of STILLNESS.
This practical TECHNOLOGY has been lost and was the TRUE purpose of
these three meditation MUDRAS.
Traditional Cosmic Mudra practical note:
For maximum thumb tip sensitivity, the thumbnails must be trimmed
right back as well as the thick skin at the very tips. Follow up with
an emery board or a pumice stone to thin the skin further.
Thumbs should not overlap as in this Dhyana Mudra, which is an
ineffectual pose:

Since the thumb pads are naturally more sensitive than the tips, a
modified Cosmic Mudra with thumbs relaxed and the thumb pads barely
touching might be more effective, as in the Buddha Mudra, but not
pressing as hard.

The Yoga Gyan Mudra can be modified slightly so the thumb and index
finger are relaxed and the pads, not the tips, are barely touching.

Fingers lightly interlocked, with palms apart and thumb pads barely
touching, is another practical position.
A steepling prayer, or Hakini mudra, with fingertips touching lightly
and thumbs just barely, like the left position in the image below, is
also effective.

The fingers do not need to be absolutely straight, to prevent muscle
strain.
The thumbs can be perfectly inline, tip to tip, or can be more
relaxed, with the upper pads barely touching, but not pressing as hard
as in the traditional Hakini mudra.

Lying down, with arms at the sides, and the thumb and forefinger pads
barely touching is an EFFORTLESS position – one can remain at the
threshold without trying and without falling asleep.
The simpler and the more RELAXED the method, the better.
