A typical training session consists of a main session and breakout room sessions. For each of the training sessions, Professor Ho taught the participants card tricks in the main session. After that, the participants were put into different breakout rooms according to their age. The student facilitator from STAMP club handled each breakout room. The participants could ask the facilitator to demonstrate the card tricks again and ask questions; the facilitator was also to give feedback when they saw any mistake made by the participants when they performed the card tricks to prepare the participants well for the competition.
A total of six card tricks were taught in the first special training session, namely Vaccination, Last Warriors, Home Quarantine, Whirly Magical Adventure, Social Distancing and The Brave Front liners. Hence, the participants were required to perform these six-card tricks in the preliminary round.
Participants had a chance to get a golden buzzer when Professor Ho asked them to perform certain card tricks. If they successfully performed it, they would get the golden buzzer. There was no limitation on the number of golden buzzers given; as long as the participants could perform the specific card trick, they would get one and skip the preliminary round, advancing into the semi-finals directly. Those who did not manage to get the golden buzzer would need to compete. Again, it helped train the participants to think out of the box. The card tricks taught served as basic knowledge for more advanced operations.
The participants could also be active in the breakout room session. They could volunteer to perform the usual card trick and advanced card trick, which they modified. They could earn 5 points by performing a usual card trick. To encourage the participants to think and modify the card tricks, they were awarded double points when they performed advanced card tricks. They could also participate in the weekday session to earn more points, even though attendance was not compulsory. The top 5 of each category could directly qualify into the semi-finals.
In the breakout rooms, participants tend to be more relaxed and active. They made some new friends as they are the same age as each other, and they could help each other despite meeting online. For example, when one of the students forgot the card trick, the others would raise their hands and perform the card trick for the student. Through the breakout rooms and weekday sessions, the relationship between Professor Ho, the student facilitators and participants improved.
Cheong Jean Wei, one of the facilitators from STAMP, said that "I am happy to see the children have excellent focus at their age on learning those card tricks and master it in a short time. The children are enthusiastic about improving the basic card tricks and presenting various card tricks to the facilitators. They always give us more than our expectations which makes me proud of their creativity."
