The 15th International Workshop on Genetic Improvement (GI 2026)
Co-located with ICSE 2026 (48th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Software Engineering)
Date: Sunday, 12 April 2026
Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Workshop website: https://geneticimprovementofsoftware.com/events/icse2026
ICSE 2026 website: https://conf.researchr.org/home/icse-2026
Genetic Improvement (GI) is the premier workshop on automated software optimisation. It brings together researchers and practitioners to share ideas, disseminate work, explore emerging trends, and spark new collaborations. We invite submissions across research, theory, and practice in all aspects of GI.
Topics include (but are not limited to):
increase efficiency
decrease memory consumption
improve energy usage
integrate AI and LLMs with GI
repair bugs
specialise software
transplant new functionality
generate multiple versions of software
improve low level or binary code
apply GI techniques in industrial settings
Recordings will be made available on YouTube whenever possible: https://www.youtube.com/@gi_workshop
The workshop is expected to be held in-person. If virtual or hybrid, virtual presentations may be possible.
If a submission is accepted, at least one author must register and present the paper.

Talk: Genetic Improvement for Software Modernization, Synergy and Opportunities
The workshop emphasizes interaction and discussion. Early and in-progress work is welcome.
We invite three types of submissions:
Research papers — 8 pages (including references)
Position papers — 2 pages (including references)
Extended abstracts (NEW) — up to 5 pages
Submission site: https://icse2026-gi.hotcrp.com/
IEEE manuscript template: https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html
Accepted papers must be presented at GI 2025 and will appear in the ICSE workshops volume.
The official publication date is when ACM makes the proceedings
available, which may be up to two weeks before ICSE 2026. This may
affect patent filing deadlines related to the published work.
Selected papers will be invited to submit to a special issue of the Automated Software Engineering (ASE) journal on genetic improvement.
