Media Alert: National Minimum Wage (NMW) Commission invites written representations for consideration to 2026 wage adjustment.
The National Minimum Wage (NMW) Commission is inviting all interested parties or stakeholders to make written submission for possible adjustments to the NMW for 2026.
The NMW Commission said it will publish its annual report and recommendations concerning possible adjustment to the National Minimum Wage to the Minister of Employment and Labour later in 2025, in accordance with Section 6(2) of the NMW Act, No. 9 of 2018.
NMW Chairperson Imraan Valodia encourages interested parties to have their say in the possible adjustment.

It is illegal for employers to pay their employees less than the minimum threshold. The NMW was first introduced for implementation in South Africa in 2019.
The minimum wage is currently fixed at R28,79 for each ordinary hour worked. The current rate was announced in February 2025 by Minister of the Department of Employment and Labour, Ms. Nomakhosazana Meth.
The Commission is responsible for annually reviewing and recommending adjustments to the national minimum wage. It also investigates and reports annually to the Minister on the impact of the national minimum wage on the economy, collective bargaining, and income differentials, making this information available to the public.

COSATU applauds NUMSA for above-inflation motor sector wage agreement
Matthew Parks, COSATU Parliamentary Coordinator, 25 August 2025
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) commends the National Unions of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) on signing an above-inflation wage agreement in the automotive sector.
NUMSA announced it had signed a three-year wage agreement with employer organisations Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI) and the Fuel Retailers Association (FRA) at the Motor Industries Bargaining Council (MIBCO). The agreement covers members working for motor components manufactures, filling stations, car dealerships, vehicle body builders, etc.
As per the agreement component manufacturer workers will receive a pay rise of 6% in Year 1; 5% in Year 2 and 3; overtime time will be 1.5% the normal rate of pay. Forecourt attendants at filling stations will receive 6% in the first year; 5% in the second year; and 4% in the third year. Cashiers and chars on the other hand will receive 6% in Year 1, and 4% in the Year 2 and 3. Workers in car dealerships will receive a 5% hike for each year of the agreement, and so will all the other unspecified workers in sector.
The union also scored a monumental victory by securing private primary healthcare cover for garage workers, who are the least paid in the sector, for the first time ever in this round of negotiations.
COSATU applauds NUMSA for signing this important agreement even as the automotive sector experiences uncertainty wrought on by the US imposed 30% tariff. The Federation particularly commends the union for having secured the primary healthcare benefit for garage workers, demonstrating the role of trade unions in fighting for and securing gains for the most vulnerable workers.

SACP statement on imperialist United States regime’s act of war against Venezuela
Mbulelo Mandlana, Head of Media, Communications and Information, 23 August 2025
In conjunction with the peace-loving people and nations worldwide, the South African Communist Party (SACP) expresses grave concern regarding the belligerent posture of the imperialist United States regime towards the state and people of Venezuela. The placing of United States war ships in the Caribbean waters with the obvious intention to provoke Venezuela is an act of war.
The United States government, under the command of Donald Trump, has once again initiated conditions for military intervention in Latin America in service of its unending ambitions for territorial expansion and political domination of its neighbouring nations. The actions of the United States regime, through its military, to violate the sovereignty of Venezuela constitute a continuation of its official policy of political destabilisation and economic asphyxiation of the entire South American region, to serve its imperialist objectives under various pretexts.
In the post-World War II era, the pretext for excessive political and military interference in Latin America was the so-called resistance to communists. However, at present, the pretext is resistance to drug cartels. Both pretexts were blatantly false from the moment they were conceived, as the actions of the United States government in South America have always been predicated on one principle: a determined implementation of the Munroe doctrine.
The Munroe doctrine serves as the political foundation for the transgression of international law and the right to sovereignty, particularly in relation to Nicaragua, Bolivia, Brazil, Panama, Cuba, Venezuela, Chile, Colombia, and other nations. The persistent United States aggression against democratically elected governments in Latin America serves as irrefutable evidence of the illegitimacy of its policy. The immediate United States economic interests, particularly in the energy sector, are linked to its objective of obtaining unrestricted access and control over the oil resources of Venezuela, thereby positioning itself favourably in the global and regional energy markets. To achieve this objective, the United States regime endeavours to destabilise the entire subcontinent, thereby creating an appearance of such instability that its military intervention is perceived as necessary and inevitable.
The imperialist mindset of the United States and its concomitant policy of treating South America as its backyard, whose fate is directly determined by its political and economic interests, epitomises the violent and immoral nature of the American state as an institution in its interactions with nations worldwide. The deployment of the three high grade United States military vessels to the Caribbean waters overlooking Venezuela constitutes an act of war that South Africans must unequivocally oppose. The unsubstantiated claims that the United States regime is primarily targeting drug cartels underscore the extent to which it employs propaganda to justify its violent tactics. Its acts of aggression form part of its longstanding policy of opposing the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela, a people’s revolution that has been ongoing for many years. It is imperative to consider the historical and contextual background of these actions when evaluating their significance.
As the SACP, we strongly call for the withdrawal of United States military forces from the territories bordering Venezuela and the full compliance of the United States with international laws and regulations. As the SACP, we condemn the United States’ impunity in violating the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States Proclamation, which declares Latin America and the Caribbean a Zone of Peace. We call upon all people worldwide to reject the United States war policy and work towards peace and solidarity.

The WFTU condemns the new Israeli offensive on Gaza
22 August 2025
The world Federation of Trade Unions strongly condemns the new offensive on Gaza. A new operation called “Gideon’s Chariots 2” is underway with the sole goal of the full occupation of Gaza and the completion of the ongoing systemic ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people in Gaza Strip.
This new escalation in combination with the formalization of the intentions to build new settlements in the West Bank cutting it off from east Jerusalem, is added to the long list of crimes against humanity committed by the Israeli government in its ongoing aggression against the Palestinian people, with the full support of the US government and its allies, once again exposing the hypocrisy of the “defenders of humanity and international law”.
The ongoing genocide against the Palestinians constitutes a deliberate and organized plan to displace and/or annihilate the Palestinians from their land, in order to expand Israeli occupation and settlement in the Palestinian territories, thus nullifying the UN resolutions that provide for a two-state solution. This is part of the broader Israel–U.S. plan for a violent reconfiguration of the entire Middle East to their own measures.
Meanwhile, the UN is raising urgent concerns, noting that the number of malnourished children in Gaza has tripled, while Israel continues to restrict critical humanitarian aid, using famine and starvation as a weapon.
The class oriented international trade’s union movement demands an immediate end to the siege on Gaza; full and unrestricted humanitarian access to food, water, medicine, and fuel; accountability for those responsible for crimes against humanity.
The WFTU stands in unwavering solidarity with the heroic people of Palestine who, despite enduring an unprecedented siege, continue to resist with dignity and courage. We salute the Palestinian working class, whose suffering is immense and whose resilience is inspiring in the face of genocide, forced displacement, and systematic starvation.
