Department of Employment and Labour condemns gender-based violence following tragic incident
6 June 2024
The Department of Employment and Labour (DEL) is deeply saddened to confirm the tragic loss of one of its employees from the Fort Beaufort Labour Centre, Eastern Cape. It is alleged that the life of this young employee was taken by another staff member, who was also their partner. Both individuals were valued members of our department.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and to all our officials who are dealing with the shock and sadness of this devastating event. The loss of a young life in such circumstances is a tragedy beyond words,” said the Acting: Director-General of the Department, Onke Mjo.
The Department acknowledges that the two colleagues were in a relationship. Relationships occur in all walks of life, but, regrettably, this relationship ended in such a tragic manner.
The Department condemns gender-based violence (GBV) in its entirety. The recent report released by the Public Protector on GBV underscores the urgency and importance of addressing this issue. Now, we are faced with this matter within our own ranks.
The Department will continue to support the family affected by this tragedy during this difficult time. We are committed to providing all necessary assistance to those affected by this tragic incident.
This matter is now in the hands of the court authorities. The Department has full confidence in the justice system and believes that the truth will prevail. The Department does not condone gender-based violence in any form and will continue to advocate for a safe and respectful work environment for all.
In parallel with the ongoing court proceedings, the Department is steadfast in its commitment to commence immediate and appropriate internal procedures, potentially encompassing disciplinary actions.
“We urge all our employees and the public to support those affected by GBV and to stand together in condemning such acts. Let us all strive to create a society where every individual is treated with dignity and respect,” concluded Mjo.

COSATU North West calls on the 7th Provincial Administration to hit the ground running
Kopano Konopi, COSATU North West Provincial Secretary, 13 June 2024
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in the North West is expecting the new provincial government to hit the ground running.
The Judge President of the Mahikeng High Court will swear-in the new members of the legislature on Friday, 14 June at the North West Provincial Legislature.
The first sitting of the legislature is also expected to elect the Presiding Officers of the House and to elect the Premier of the province.
COSATU North West congratulates all the candidates who have been elected to serve in the 7th administration. We hope that these men and women are equal to the task of combating the challenges facing our province. The North West province has the highest unemployment in the country and also has a deficit when it comes to the delivery of basic infrastructure.
We expect the 7th administration to focus on the following:
1. To grow the economy in the manner that it will create jobs and improve the livelihood of the people of this province.
2. To provide quality service and improve access to clean drinking water.
3. Provide access to fully resourced health services.
4. To revitalise the infrastructure of the province in a manner that will address the road backlog and other economic infrastructure in the province.
The Federation wishes all elected MPLs well and calls on them to hit the ground running as the residents of the North West have put their trust in them.

WFTU statement on the World Day Against Child Labour
12 Jun 2024
The World Federation of Trade Unions, the militant voice of 105 million workers who live, work, and struggle in 133 countries of the 5 continents, reaffirms that the class-oriented trade union movement is fundamentally opposed and timelessly struggles against the capitalist exploitation and particularly the inhumane and bloody child labour.
On the occasion of June 12th, World Day Against Child Labor, we strongly condemn the barbaric exploitation of children as cheap labor force all over the world. Even in the most advanced economies, underage exploitation is a fact, and childhood is stolen from children. The big capital monopolies, driven by their endless thirst for profits exploit the children as cheap labor. Especially amid the capitalist crisis and the deepening of intra-imperialist rivalries, the exploitation of children is intensifying even more, always with a view to maximizing the profits of multinationals. Child workers are mainly employed in the sectors of agriculture, fishing, and mining, while other children work even as modern-day slaves.
As the world’s class-oriented trade union movement, the WFTU organizes with unwavering commitment our struggle for the abolition of child labour and for the total protection of ALL children’s rights:
– The children’s right to proper nutrition and healthcare in a world where thousands of children die daily, because of lack of food and while hunger is responsible for half of child deaths in Africa.
– Public free and compulsory education for all children.
– Recreation and access to leisure activities that develop the children’s personality and talents.
We demand all the necessary measures to be promptly taken for the adequate protection of children from child labor, as well as for the covering of all of their contemporary needs. The international class-oriented trade union movement intensifies its struggle and initiatives against child labour and all forms of exploitation.
