SADTU Eastern Cape congratulates the province’s Matric Class of 2024

Ntame Malibongwe, SADTU Eastern Cape Provincial Secretary, 21 January 2025

As SADTU, we congratulate the Matric Class of 2024 on their commendable and historic achievement in the National Senior Certificate (NSC).

The attainment of an 84.98% pass rate, with an improvement of 3.6% from 2023, coupled with a 6% increase in Bachelor Passes (from 39% in 2023 to 45% in 2024), is highly commendable, as noted by SADTU in Eastern Cape.

We are pleased with this significant milestone achieved by all our 12 districts, each attaining pass rates between 80% and 90%. This is a clear indication that the education system is maturing in Eastern Cape and that stakeholders are actively participating in shaping the future of their children, especially those from destitute families.

The Matric Class of 2024 has become our pride, our hope, and our ambassadors. They were fully trained and well-equipped under the great supervision of committed, courageous, and dedicated commanders (teachers). A special thanks goes to all teachers in general and to SADTU members in particular, for consistently demonstrating zeal, sacrifice, dedication, and determination in ensuring that learners pass with flying colours.

Despite the positive outcomes we have highlighted, the sector is still confronted with several pressing issues that need urgent resolution, including:

(i) Overcrowding in schools.

(ii) A clear plan for Grade 12 repeaters.

(iii) Guidance on subject combinations in the FET band.

(iv) Implications of teaching Mathematical Literacy.

(v) Charging of exorbitant fees by schools in Quintiles 1–3, despite being declared no-fee schools, is particularly concerning.

(vi) While our schools and teachers achieve these results, they do so in unconducive environments. We are further disturbed by the Department of Education's failure to implement subsidies for GEMS, which frustrates our members on daily basis. We understand that the scheme should inform the employer and employees of the expected amounts to be paid towards GEMS before the year's end.

We applaud the Provincial Government in general and the Provincial Department of Education in particular for opening avenues in scarce skills for the children of the working class. This includes registering 25 Grade 10 learners and providing bursaries to 25 learners who passed Grade 12, enabling them to study Aviation Courses.

Police launch manhunt for Stilfontein underground kingpin

Stilfontein, 20 January 2025; The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng has ordered maximum resources to be mobilised in finding an alleged kingpin who resurfaced from shaft 11 in Stilfontein last week.

Major General Asaneng has also warned that heads will roll once they find those officials that aided the kingpin to escape from police custody after resurfacing from shaft 11 last week.

Extensive investigations and tracing operations are underway to find those officials who aided his escape between shaft 11 and the Stilfontein police holding cells. According to records, TIGER was never booked into various other stations where some illegal miners are being kept. TIGER is also not admitted at a local hospital for further medical care.

The alleged kingpin and ringleader is a Lesotho national and according to records his name is James Neo Tshoaeli but is commonly known as TIGER.

TIGER is being fingered in several statements as one of the ring leaders who controlled operations underground. He is also being accused by some illegal miners who resurfaced underground as him being allegedly responsible for some deaths ,assault and torture that is alleged to have taken place according to videos in police possession. He is also alleged to have hoarded and kept food away from other illegal miners.

Major General Asaneng has expressed disappointment in what he terms as an embarrassment to the Vala Umgodi operation that has been running from December 2023.

He has vowed to ensure that those responsible for this escape from custody are brought to book and that TIGER is found.

TIGER is a fugitive of justice and is considered dangerous.

Members of the public are advised to share any information pertaining to his whereabouts to the Stilfontein police station.

Swearing-in of President Chapo in Mozambique: A welcome step in upholding democratic processes and sovereign institutions in advancing the African Revolution

Dr Alex Mohubetswane Mashilo, SACP Central Committee Member

National Spokesperson & Political Bureau Secretary for Policy and Research, 21 January 2025

The swearing-in of Mozambique’s President, Daniel Chapo of FRELIMO, on Wednesday marked a victory for democracy. He was democratically elected and Mozambique’s sovereign legal institutions – specifically the highest court of the land – confirmed his election after thoroughly examining the evidence. South Africa’s decision to attend the inauguration was the correct step, countering the anti-democratic narrative that the South African government should have shunned this important ceremony in a neighbouring country.

FRELIMO and the newly elected government must prioritise unifying the Mozambican people and spearheading a radical change agenda to address the needs of the population while countering imperialist interventions that exploit existing challenges.

Following the court’s ruling, the SACP on 24 December 2024 once again congratulated FRELIMO on its electoral victory, having previously welcomed it on record.

FRELIMO’s success reaffirmed the will of the people for revolutionary leadership and a commitment to democratic social transformation. The court pronouncement, confirming the election results, came despite an imperialist agenda aimed at undermining democratically elected liberation movements that rose to power in Southern Africa, and other parts of the world, after leading national liberation struggles and achieving transitions to democratic governance. Violence against democratic processes must both be discouraged and strongly condemned by all.

The SACP stands firmly with FRELIMO and the people of Mozambique in advancing a shared vision of sovereignty and anti-imperialism. We reiterate the position expressed by our General Secretary, Comrade Solly Mapaila: ā€œOur two movements, bound by a deep history of shared struggle, waged relentless fights against colonial oppressionā€. FRELIMO’s role in Mozambique’s liberation and the SACP’s contribution to South Africa’s liberation reflect the interconnectedness of our struggles for national freedom.

The African Revolution remains an unfinished journey. This moment represents a critical challenge to intensify and advance our collective struggle for genuine freedom and self-determination. The fight is far from over and we must press forward with unwavering dedication and solidarity.
