Forty-one people lost their lives, including 11 nurses and a driver at Tambo Memorial Hospital, when the gas tanker exploded when it got stuck under a low bridge on 24 December 2022.

The explosion caused a huge structural damage to the hospital’s accident, emergency and X-ray departments.

This year's International Nurses Day event for Gauteng will be dedicated to the victims of this accident. This year's theme for the International Nurses Day is: Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care.

Media Alert: COSATU Leadership to embark on an ANC campaign trail in Gauteng this week

Louisah Modikwe, COSATU Gauteng Provincial Secretary, 21 May 2024

The Leadership of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and its Affiliates are participating in a mass voter outreach programme across Gauteng in support of the Federation’s Alliance partner, the African National Congress.

The National Office Bearers of the Federation, led by the President of COSATU Zingiswa Losi, will be engaging with communities across the province through workplace meetings, door to door canvassing, public meetings, public transport and shopping mall blitzes, and religious services.

These areas cover the entire Gauteng Province, with blitzes across thousands of voting districts from Tshwane to Johannesburg, Sedibeng, the West Rand and Ekurhuleni.

This unprecedented mass door to door campaign will culminate with the ANC’s Siyanqoba Rally at 9am Saturday 25 May at FNB Stadium, Soweto.

COSATU is humbled by the overwhelming response we have received from voters, and in particular workers, who are committed to turning out in their millions on election day in defence of the many gains workers have won since 1994 and to renew the ANC’s mandate to cleanse and renew the nation, grow the economy and create jobs, tackle corruption and crime, and deliver a better life for all.

Minister Blade Nzimande launches initiative of SETA Funding Commitments for Skills Development

20 May 2024

Earlier today, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Prof Blade Nzimande officially launched an initiative of SETA Funding Commitments for Skills Development at Ndlebezembuzi Hall in kwaSwayimane Village, KwaZulu-Natal.

These SETA funding commitments are in response to requests that were submitted to the Minister by Inkosi SN Gcumisa of the Gcumisa Tribal Authority and the local mayor, Cllr Mandla Zondi for the Department of Higher Education and Training, to build a campus of uMgungundlovu TVET College or a multi-skills development centre in KwaSwayimane Village.

Informed by a needs analysis, today Minister Nzimande launched a variety of SETA training interventions, whose total value is R30 694 700,00.

Given the importance of agriculture in the kwaSwayimane area, AgriSETA is the lead SETA of this skills development initiative.

The breakdown of the SETA contributions are as follows:

AgriSETA has contributed R5 000 000.00 towards development of skills for 800 learners in crop production (such as vegetables) and livestock farming (such as poultry, goats, and cattle). It will also provide accreditation to the three (3) skills centres identified in uMshwathi area;

FP&MSETA has contributed R1 830 000.00 towards Learnership and Skills program for sewing, cabinet making and furniture making ;

MICTSETA has contributed R2 916 000.00 towards Learnerships and Skills programs in digital training, mobile device repair and technical support training;

CETA has contributed R12 788 700.00 towards Artisan Development and Learnerships in Bricklaying, Carpentry, Welding and Electrical;

FOODBEV SETA has contributed R3 350 000.00 towards a skills programme in baking;

INSETA has contributed R2 275 000 towards Skills programmes in digital skills;

W&R SETA has contributed R2 535 000.00 towards digital skills programs and SMME support.

This SETA skills development intervention will be piloted in the kwaSwayimane community.

For the initial phase, it will benefit over 2000 community members, mainly young people who are currently not in employment, education nor training (NEET).

In his address the Minister indicated that “This contribution by our SETAs is their collective commitment to addressing unemployment, poverty, inequality and to improving the quality of life in the community of kwaSwayimane.”

He added that “The contribution by our various SETAs also symbolises the commitment of government to changing the lives of ordinary citizens, in particular in our rural areas. We are particularly excited to be making this contribution in this community. As a Department, we believe that we need to make sustainable investments in our rural areas, with the view of making them economically viable.”

The event took the form of a community outreach programme that was attended by over 300 members of the community, including the mayor of uMshwathi Local Municipality, Cllr. Mandla Zondi, Inkosi Gcumisa, DHET Director-General, Dr Nkosinathi Sishi, Chairperson of AgriSETA Board, Ms Sharon Sepeng, NSFAS COO, Mr. Errol Makhubela and other SETA Chairpersons and CEOs.

There were also exhibitions by the various SETAs, CETs and TVET Colleges from the area, including an on site NSFAS service point for students or parents with NSFAS related concerns.

This has become a standard feature of all Departmental community engagement projects.

International-Solidarity

The US to immediately remove Cuba from the list of countries that “allegedly sponsor terrorism”

20 May 2024

The World Federation of Trade Unions once again joins its voice with the struggling people of Cuba and its workers and government, in their longstanding and just demand that Cuba be permanently removed from the list of countries that “allegedly sponsor terrorism”.

Even the recent report of the US Secretary of State does not include Cuba among the countries that “do not cooperate with US counter-terrorism efforts”, as it slanderously included it in previous years.

The international class-oriented trade union movement knows that Cuba is not only not a country that is a supporter of terrorism, but is itself a victim of terrorism. For six decades, the heroic Cuban people have been confronted with the criminal blockade imposed by the USA and the constant attempts at foreign intervention in the country.

The inclusion of Cuba in the list of countries “allegedly sponsoring terrorism” is just another attempt by US imperialism to isolate the island politically and economically, in order to intervene in the internal affairs of the country and impoverish its people.

Therefore, the WFTU reaffirms its firm solidarity and support to Cuba and its just demands!
