Greetings everyone,
The sustainability coalition’s Transportation Action Team is organizing a community science project and we need your help. We want to start keeping track of the percentage of trips around town by different transportation modes: motor vehicle, walking, biking, rolling, and taking the bus. This is known as transportation mode share.

Shifting transportation mode share from motor vehicle trips to active transportation and transit trips is an important goal of the City of Corvallis and the sustainability community. This shift will reduce carbon pollution, improve community health and safety, free up space for more affordable housing, and allow our city to grow while improving quality of life. Despite the importance of this metric, it is not being tracked in our city.

To start tracking transportation mode share, we will conduct modal counts of individual trips at selected sites throughout Corvallis - and we need Trip Counters!

Here’s the plan:
September 30: Site selection will be completed, with sites in all wards and most neighborhoods.
• October 1-5: Trip Count training, distribution of supplies, and site assignment. Training will occur through email and zoom if needed.
• October 6-9: Modal trip counts will be conducted Monday through Thursday during peak travel times: 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.

Are you interested in being part of this community project? If so, here’s the information I need from volunteer Trip Counters:
• Name:
• Email address:
• Ward: (To find your ward, click on the ward-boundary-maps here: https://www.corvallisoregon.gov/cm/page/city-adopts-new-ward-boundary-maps)
• Date(s) available: (October 6 through October 9)
• Time period(s) available: (7-9am, 4-6pm)

Please respond only to me (stevenst...@gmail.com) with this information by October 1. Also, please feel free to recruit other Trip Counters by forwarding this email and inviting them to join our community project.

Thank you for taking the time to read this email and consider being a volunteer. I hope to hear from you soon!

Cheers, Steve
