Hi friends and neighbors,
Wow, what an exciting weekend, and it’s sure to be an exciting few weeks around here with all of the cleanup ahead of us!
First, and MOST important, a note about safety. There are still some significantly sized pockets of ice out in the McDonald, Dunn and Cameron Forests, both on the trees and on the ground. We are seeing large fist-size chunks of ice continuing
to fall from trees out there and black ice on the roads and trails. Even in the thawed areas, the storm left some branches and tops of trees hanging that could fall at any time. Overhead hazards still exist out there in a big way!
Travel in the forest is not advised until we have a chance to fully assess the situation and the ice has melted.
Our staff and volunteers are working carefully to assess the situation and begin to open up roads and trails. As trails are cleared, they will be posted on Facebook to let folks know.
Speaking of volunteers… We are looking for some folks to help out by assisting the Student Logging Training Program crew with clearing some forest trails leading out of Peavy Arboretum tomorrow. We are looking for volunteers to work either
7:00-12:00 or 1:00-4:00. If you think you might be interested, please e-mail me back as soon as possible. We will likely be looking for other volunteers throughout the week to help out as well, and we may end up coordinating a larger volunteer work party
event for this weekend, but we’ll know more after we have a chance to spend some more time out there today and tomorrow. Stay tuned for more info.
We are also asking folks to please NOT head out on your own with a chainsaw to clear trails, but to notify us of the issue instead. This is for many reasons, the primary one being the safety of our visitors. We also hope to be able to
make use of some of the logs, and it will be very important that they be removed carefully to make sure they are not damaged.
Finally, in an effort to reduce in-box clutter, I’m going to start posting updates, minor volunteer opportunities, trails that are cleared, etc on our Facebook page instead of sending them out to this listserve. If you haven’t done so
yet, please follow us on Facebook to stay up-to-date:

I’ll use this list-serve to let you know about large volunteer events associated with storm cleanup and about anything major changes.
Thanks for your patience as we address the impacts from this storm,
