Subject: Update on storm cleanup efforts - open roads and trails

Hello everyone,

Here’s an update on our recent efforts to clear out storm debris from forest roads and trails.  We’ve made so much progress in just one week, thanks to many of you!  There are still potentially some overhead hazards remaining, so please continue to keep your eyes up when you’re out there, and avoid being out in heavy rain and wind.

Roads:
The 500 Road has been cleared from Peavy Arboretum to Lewisburg Saddle.  Portions of other roads on  the McDonald Forest have been cleared (including the 600 Road near Oak Creek), however, large segments of these roads remain uncleared at this time.  On the Dunn Forest, the 100, 110 and 300 roads have been cleared of debris.  An excavator continues to work in the McDonald Forest this week clearing roads.

Trails:
The following trails are entirely free of debris: Intensive Management, Calloway Creek, Discovery, CFIRP, Woodland, Peavy Arboretum Trails, Homestead, Horse, Horse/Dan’s Connector, and New Growth Trails
The following trails have been cleared of most debris, but still have a few trees remaining to be cleared with a chainsaw: Dan’s Trail (3 trees remain near the top), Alpha (4 trees remaining), Ridge (4 trees remaining), Old Growth (4 trees remaining).
These trails have not been worked on yet, and visitors should expect to encounter lots of trees and debris at this point: Section 36 Loop, Banzai, Powder House, Uproute, and Extendo (though the southern half of the trail is clear).

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!!!!!
This weekend, we cleared Old Growth, New Growth, Alpha and Ridge Trails with a crew of 23 volunteers and 4 staff.  Last week, an additional 17 volunteers helped our staff and students from the Student Logging Training Program remove trees from trails throughout the rest of the forest.  We send out a hearty THANK YOU to these 40 individuals who rallied to get this forest open for everyone to enjoy the trails again.

We will be working with the student logging training program again tomorrow to continue clearing trails,  and we’re actually looking for 2 people to help out in the afternoon.  Please contact Matt McPharlin (matt.mc...@oregonstate.edu) if you’re interested in helping out.  We will see what work remains to be done at that point, and start strategizing volunteer opportunities for after Thanksgiving, so stay tuned…
