What's a cheap way to put a video cam (could be over IP or just analog
video) 600' away? Wireless does not work, there are trees.

From my brother in Chico --

> We are trying to get PG&E to open a dam at De Sabla Power house. It should be a no brainer but PG&E es fighting it even though the power house is obsolete and non functional.

I am a network guy so I immediately think of IP based solutions. I would
try use CAT5E wire and put a repeater in the middle, making 2 100 meter
segments. Can I run POE through a 100m cable?

I am a ham radio guy too but only on paper (have a ticket + no experience)

Interested to hear your opinions.

I see this webcam transmits over 1000 feet:
http://www.westmorelandconservancy.org/WildlifeWebcam-3.htm

and the watermark in its image leads me to this website;
http://www.pixcontroller.com/

which has cameras for a couple hundred bucks.
I babbled at a video guy I work with about this, and he suggested setting up mobile hotspots to repeat the signal. with dataplans for each? which sounds crazy expensive.

just spitballing some ideas. very curious what others would suggest.

I realize you aren't thinking of wireless, but you should check these
guys out. I have a pair of the 5GHz units and although they aren't on
the air right now, I *can* attest to how easy they were to set up and
how reliable a 600' connection was made. Besides 5GHz units, they also
sell 2.4gHz and 900MHz. (The 2.4Ghz are only $79 each.)

They can be used simply as an ethernet bridge or access point, though I
used mine only in bridging mode. They claim distances to several km.

I asked some video pals about this, and one said:
I would use a Foscam Pan/Tilt Wireless IP Network Camera w/ 26' Infrared Night Vision (FI8910W) with a Verizon Jetpack™ 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot SCH-LC11 to connect the camera to the Internet.

just passing along.
