Hello,

my name is Simon, and I'm new to Corvallis/Albany area. I would like to know where the fellow geeks, computer scientists, nerds and robotics people hang out.
I looked for a hacker space in the area, but I haven't found any nearby.

My background is in Robotics and AI, software engineering, mobile robotics, aerospace robotics, complex systems science, 3D dome animation, systems biology, fabrication--machining, etc...

I'm looking for a vibrant group of people to connect with, and to see what the area offers.

-Simon.

There is Eugene Maker Space, for small values of nearby. (-:
http://www.eugenemakerspace.com/

I'm looking forward to hearing what others suggest. I'm sure
there are some groups around that I don't know about.

(And what is 3D dome animation?)

Hi Simon,

Corvallis currently hosts no formal/commercial hacker space. The idea
is out there, as the existence of this group indicates, but nothing
has matured as of yet. Recently Josephine Zarkovich
<jose...@majestic.org> hosted a series of meetings on the topic.

On a more informal level there are multiple overlapping groups working
on many projects:
- building a 3D printer, after 1.5 years we have given up on the repwrap;
- many groups building kinetic sculpture racers;
- a thriving electric vehicle community;
- a startup hand printing / paper making space;

Many garages and outbuildings around town have enough equipment to be
called create spaces.

Please feel welcome to use this list to ask for introductions, focus
on a project, or to spark your own project.

Toby

Is there a Laser Cutter and wide format printer available with in the community?

For as many garage shops that are around, it might be nice to have an inventory of tools that are available.

I know Dan Whitaker has some kind of automated cutting tool, don't know if it is laser based.

Given that HP has been building printers for 20 years, there are oodles of various printers in random corners.

There is a set of 3D tools both at OSU CS and OSU ME departments.

Ooh, I didn't stop to think that HP's printer division that makes the print heads is located here.

I have a project where I want to make a gantry printer with vacuum hold down plates for working with thicker stock to print on ceramic coated metal plates, but at the moment I just wanted to print some images of my work.

I'm an OSU student and work for the physics dept, I also have a Makerbot Cupcake CNC that i've been tweaking for the past couple years

I can print small parts with pretty good reliability and only charge the cost of materials and a small bit for time!

What we have here isn't exactly "vibrant". But we
sometimes build things. There is a healthy group
of builders of human power vehicles. I'm building
one now. It will be amphibious and all terrain.
If you are interested in joining us, let me know.

Kassie has given two lessons in how to use blender
to create 3D models. Speaking of which,

Kassie:
Are you up for another lesson tomorrow evening?

That is hosted at my house at 7PM or whenever she
shows up. We originally met on Wednesdays to build
the reprap kit a bunch of us bought. We abandoned
that when we figured out that to make it work we
would have to replace almost the entire kit. The
original was just a bunch of trash. Lesson:
Don't buy from techzone.

I think we are all still interested in getting access
to a 3D printer. I know I am. But having been badly
burned once, we are leery of buying a kit.

There is also some casting/foundry work that goes
on here. But that's been quiet for awhile. You
can blame me for that. I drive it and I haven't
been doing any lately.

We did a fair bit of Blender work at SF_X (Santa Fe Complex) http://sfcomplex.org, I'm one of the early founders of the Complex, but we closed the physical space.

I'm prefer Maya to Blender, as I find the Blender UI somewhat screwy, though its game engine, and python scriptability make it very attractive.

where were you thinking of meeting?

Also are there any CNC routers like a shopbot that have a 4'x8' table, or 5'x10' table.

Nice!

Blender is free.

Responded off list.

The only CNC machines I know of are in private businesses
or in the schools.
