I've been looking at Endicia/Stamps.com/Pitney Bowes and have done my fair share of Googling for an answer of which service is better, but I'd like to hear what you all have to say.

I need to signup for either Endicia/Stamps.com/Pitney Bowes account this week...

My needs are:
Supports USPS (would be nice to have UPS supported too, but not mandatory)
Prints on a variety of mediums (plain paper, labels, Zebra, etc)
Supports hiding the actual shipping cost
Optional insurance and delivery confirmation for Priority Mail
Would prefer Mac but Windows would be ok.
Shipping scale (would like one that's included or near free, and supports up to 25-30 lbs.)
Monthly cost, not a huge deal if the solution is great

At this point I'm leaning towards Endicia for Mac, the only caveat I have is the shipping scale and whether or not it would be supported by the software.

Anyone want to give their 2c of experience?

Cheers,
Ben

I wonder why the deadline?

Is there a way that you can share/test someone elses service so that you can see how they work before you jump into a decision?

No reason not share other than the inconvenience of running every parcel down to someone else's office... might as well just go to the post office.

For the most part these services are near identical other than the installed software and the monthly subscription price.

I just use the Click’n Ship with the usps.

·         It is free

·         It is a trust based system.

·         I purchased a scale on Amazon on which I weigh my shipment and type in the weight to the usps website. I have an account set up and it charges each purchase to my credit card.

·         I get free confirmation and tracking number by paying online.

·         I can print Priority mail labels on regular paper and just tape them on the box.

·         I get a few cents discount compared to paying at the post office and I get to skip the line! (at least here in Philomath). I just run to the front, drop the boxes on the desk and leave.

·         I have a large mail box and can just put all boxes in the mail box to be taken. No matter what the weight! (this is awesome considering the new restrictions with items over 13 oz. this is not the case if they are labeled priority for some reason). You can also schedule a pick up through the website when you print postage.

The only down so far is that I cannot print first class, media or other mail choices. The priority, however, include the additional tracking option which is handy if anything goes missing or delayed.

Hope this helps. I consider Click n ship the best kept secret! (though am sure there are other secrets out there waiting for me to enjoy)

We also use Click’n Ship.  We ship most of our orders that way.

We spoke with our mailman, and he now comes twice a day to check if we have any packages!  How convenient!

A side benefit is that our website uses the USPS lookup for calculating shipping, but using Click’n ship gives us a discount, so we make a little on shipping.

I've used both Click'n Ship and Endicia.
Both work fine and Click'n Ship is free.
However I've found the ease of use of Endicia to be well worth the cost of the service.
The number of clicks and keystrokes is just much lower and the processing time for the software is faster too.  This helps my overall operational efficiency quite a bit.

If you're only doing a few packages, it's probably not a big deal.
However if you're trying to fill 5 or 10 orders in an evening, it adds up in my opinion.

Just my two cents worth.

Our experience has been with Endicia (about two years now) at the $9.95/mos rate.  I would like the stealth feature (hidden prices); but do not want to increase our monthly rate for this feature alone.  During our busiest holiday season we find Endicia very easy to train employees.  I like the features of being able to look up past history, no-cost delivery confirmation and the commercial base discount price.  If you make a mistake you can get e-refund.  We also ship internationally and it makes the customs documents very easy.

I have no experience on the other two you mention

Bottom line on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best) I’d rate Endicia an 8+.

We found that we saved lots on shipping when we started using first class instead of Priority for packages less than 13 oz. With Endicia, we are able to get delivery confirmation on first class by entering them as first class "parcels" rather than first class envelopes. Keep in mind that these need to be over 3/4" thick to be a parcel. We keep a stash of 3/4" styrofoam blocks to drop into envelopes that are not thick enough.

Regarding postage scales....

Is it necessary with these installed software applications to have a postage scale that is interfaced via USB, or could one use any certified shipping scale and then manually enter the weight into the software?

Thanks,
Ben

With Click’n ship you just enter the weight manually, so any good scale works.  We use two..  a small one for things under 2 lbs, and a larger one for heavier boxes.

This the scale doesn't need to be a 'certified' scale for shipping/postage... really good to know!

Ben

We enter weight manually. Each packer has a scale at their station, because knowing the weight during packing can affect their choice of shipping method, box and packing material. When they log out the package they mark the weight on it, and then the person generating shipping labels uses that weight.

The scale does not need to be certified, but if it reads high you may pay too much; if it reads low you may get the shipment returned for inadequate postage.  So, it’s a good idea to get an accurate scale.

Ours is not certified, but has been good so far.

We’ve used Endicia for the last four years. We’ve been really happy several aspects of the service… hidden shipping costs, different delivery services like confirmation and signature, insurance is available for an additional fee (we do this on LARGE orders and international orders and we’ve actually gotten paid when we had claims). We use a higher service so that we were able to integrate the information from our database with the shipping program… this means we don’t have to type in the customers name and address, just their order number and then Endicia pulls up all the shipping indo. The higher service level also lets up print return postage labels that our customers can use to return shoes to us.
