Proworks has been pioneering rich snippets.   (sorry I missed their talk now)

Has anyone else worked with them?

Webmaster tools is now proactively suggesting their use:

"We do not detect any structured data on your site.
Structured data helps Google understand the content on your site, which can be used to display rich snippets in search results.
You provide structured data by adding HTML markup to your site's pages.
Read more about rich snippets.
Visit schema.org - an industry-supported collection of schemas for structured data markup."

I'm trying to understand the importance, and priority I should place on integrating rich snippets into some sites for local businesses, and for local businesses doing business nationally and beyond.

cheers,

Thank you for the mention Katherine.

Here is a cheat-sheet intro to structured data. http://www.proworks.com/resources/downloads/cheat-sheets/what-are-rich-snippets-and-structured-data/

Structured data can simply be thought of as code one a webpage that Google and other crawlers can read and use to create rich snippets. Rich snippets are viewed by human users.

For e-commerce I think the short list of things that are valuable to define with structured data start with products. Here is an example of what a product can look like in Google search results using rich snippets. http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.overstock.com%2FOffice-Supplies%2FOffice-Star-Professional-Air-Grid-Deluxe-Task-Chair%2F2605023%2Fproduct.html&html=

Some folks believe that structured data is going to be very important for the web moving forward. I agree based on the activity of Google, Bing and Yahoo. These three competitors together created schema.org last year. Schema.org defines a standard format for websites to use in order to help the search engines index web pages.
