Hi eTailers,

The next session of Mari Smith's Facebook Money Mastery is today at noon.  Join me at the Footwise conference room if you want to take in the webinar and discussion following.

Last Thursday's session was focused on launching a new business or product on Facebook.  Mari drew on her experience as a partner with Mike Stelsner in launching an information sharing business - Social Media Examiner.  It came across as a semi-promotion for the site and the business but there were examples worth paying attention to for more retail-focused businesses.  It's an interesting business model - they have created an audience for high-quality articles that are contributed gratis by highly qualified authors.  the site gets an exclusive on the content for 14 days after which the author can publish that articles anywhere else.  The authors win by being validated as authorities in their area of expertise.  The hosting site wins through advertising that appears along with the articles.  But the real pay-off is from the conferences the Examiner hosts throughout the year which are a pay-to-attend function for participants.  In the past few years this model has grown from concept to pulling in over $4 mil annually.

Other factoids from the session -

Email open rates are in the 15-20 % range.

More people follow blogs via email than use RSS feeds

Just under 50% of Facebook users indicate that they have been influenced in a buying decision by information found on Facebook.

Ran across this resource that you may be interested in:

I certainly learned a few things from it, like to put your web URL in your ‘About’ section that posts under your profile picture and how to maximize the use of the apps (those little photos on the right-hand side that say ‘events’, ‘photos’, etc.  We can do more with them than we know!
