Dear Etailers,

Well, Peter doesn't think this is out of line, so here goes.  The business that takes all my waking (and dreaming) moments these days, Farm Stay U.S. (www.farmstayus.com), is applying for a 'Mission: Small Business' grant that is being sponsored by Living Social and Chase Bank and run through FB.  I guess, as much as we (Farm Stay U.S.) have been posting regularly on FB, we have been largely speaking to ourselves (!) because one of the requirements to be considered for the grant (besides the application) is to get at least 250 votes.  With 1200 fans, we only have 125 votes and that has taken the last 10 days!  There are only 7 days left to qualify. (Peter sent me a great explanation of why this is, with the way FB works, and I am more than happy to share if anyone wants to know the math)

I would appreciate any votes I could get from this group as well as any creative strategies you might have for getting more than just your vote sent our way.  I am entering the contest as: Farm Stay U.S. (the dots are important!).  The process to vote is only slightly convoluted, but you sign into FB, type in Mission: Small Business, it asks you to sign in again, then takes you to a page where you type in the name of the company, it shows up with our address (in this case Alsea, OR) and you click on Vote.  Then, you're done!

This is a long shot since it's a national program, but I think I have a good story to tell and, as they say in the lottery business, "You can't win if you don't play".

Many thanks, Scottie

Hey Scottie,

Absolutely. I voted. And I sent a request to the Path Less Pedaled kids (my daughter) to make a request online to their readers. With 6,000 FB fans hopefully you’ll get a few more votes from them.

Good luck!
Sue

Good luck!

Scottie, I put the following post on my FB page:

Farm Stay U.S. (www.farmstayus.com) is a local business that supports and promotes small farms and locally-grown food by providing a "reservation service" for farm stays to supplement farmer's income.  It is trying to win a grant and needs our VOTE:

1. Type 'Mission: Small Business' in the FB search box at the top

2.  Sign into site using FB login

3.  On landing page, scroll down to search box and type:  Farm Stay U.S.     (include periods) and hit return.

4.  Business address appears--should be in Alsea, Oregon

5.  Click on Vote

6.  You're done!

I think this is a great idea!

I hope you get some votes from it.  I love your business idea!

Best of “luck”!

Cindy

Hi Scottie,

We're ready to roll with this for tomorrow's post -

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You can use your super Birkenstock powers to help local farms! Farm Stay U.S. is a referral site that matches up farmers who host farm stays (like a Bed & Breakfast but on a farm) and guests who want the back-to-the-land experience. The more votes they get, the more opportunities they have to receive necessary grant money!

1. Click on this link: https://www.missionsmallbusiness.com/

2. Sign into site using Facebook login (the blue button on the right)

3. Scroll down to search box and type: Farm Stay U.S. (include periods) and hit return.

4. The business address appears--should be in Alsea, Oregon

5. Click on Vote

6. Hey, you've helped a Farmer!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Did they say anywhere that they were looking for local votes?  The ones coming from this post will be coming in nation-wide.

You were at 149 votes when I voted a few minutes ago.  If we get this in front of 5k fans and there is a 2% response rate we should get the 101 votes you need to break 250. I'm curious to see how many votes you get tomorrow.  I hope this gets you over the top!

Hi Peter,

I can't thank you and Tammy enough.  I was afraid Tammy was going to be mad that I took a day away from the computer on Sunday :).  I think what you all posted was perfect.  No, the votes don't need to be local.  I so hope we can get this over the top.  Never realized how hard this was going to be.  As I mentioned, great lesson for me!  I actually think an etailing session with Tammy taking the lead to talk about creating a 'tribe' would be beneficial to many of us, who don't apparently know that we are wasting our time if we can't do this right!

You will see that one of your customers didn't really understand why we are seeking this grant and Tammy (or you) had a great response.  I just elaborated a bit.  I hope you don't mind.

Again, many thanks for your support.  I hope your numbers are correct and we do make it over the top with votes because the reality of the application is that it is a pain in the ass to complete and the statistics of winning are slim. The other lesson I have learned from this is that I may go after a Kickstarter campaign and find there is more success in that :)...now if my farmers would only pay me and not want the marketing for free and some place like Whole Foods would want to adopt our mission with a sponsorship, that would mean we were headed in the right direction!

Cheers, Scottie

Hi Scottie,

I tried to login to check the vote count a few minutes ago and found I could not get back in to the page where current votes are tallied.  The response rate looks much lower than what I had hoped for...  I only saw 155 votes the last time I was able to check.

Scottie, you may want to nudge your own list again (maybe a Loyan style nudge creating compelling desire to act).  1% seems like an incredibly low rate for your own list to be voting, so maybe something else is wrong on the FB app side.  I voted and shared too.  Something isn't quite adding up with the tallies. (Maybe Chase is doing the counting--that would totally explain...)

Pam and Peter, love the suggestions and reflections.  Nothing like learning on the go. We are closer to our 250. Have 52 more votes to go. Will re-post my plea on both Farm Stay U.S. and Leaping Lamb Farm Facebook pages with a succinct and passionate request :). I want to thank you for helping me with this. Now to figure out how to stand out in the crowd on the application!

Subject: Re: [corvallis-etailing] I could use your help

I acted, so I guess I felt compelled.  I read Peter's post as a sort of corny "Save the Farm!"  I think it actually said Help a farmer today. What I posted on Facebook was a takeoff on what Peter posted along those lines too.  Remember, usually at least half of people who will respond will do so in first 24 hrs from online request.

I think for a second emailing to your group, you could leave out the steps and just give the link and clearly state Farm Stay U.S. in Alsea, OR.  Leave it to people to figure out how to enter it.  (You can actually enter location or name, and since you are the only one in your location, it only brings up you.)

When I was a girl scout I couldn't sell a single box of cookies, 'cause I was so shy and humble that I apologized for even asking, which made us both believe not buying was the right answer.  Does that make sense?

So, here's my free (guaranteed to be worth what you paid) second hand marketing advice:  Share your passion--what will the grant do for farmers and guests?  Believe it!   Keep your request to just two sentances and the link, since its a follow-up email.  Keep it succinct.  Less is more.  You could ask someone at ProWorks to frame it/come up with a sound bite. That's all I got.

Any suggestions on what would be a compelling desire to act? I can only come up with a drawing for a farm stay or something and even then, how will I know who voted for me when it only shows the count.  Hmmm.

Thanks for the nudge :).  I will try...something!

Pam, thanks for thinking of me and ProWorks.

Scottie, Based on my perceived increase in the support or awareness of the small farmer/local food movement I would associate with that. I like "cause" marketing. Its an emotional motivator. If I think of anything that seems more helpful I'll let you know.

We made it!!! 251 votes and still counting. Thank you all for your votes and your suggestions. Of course, all this does is qualify our application for review, but it was a much larger step than I imagined. Fingers crossed that we can rise to the top of the reader pile. Of course, a little good luck wouldn't hurt either.

Again, many thanks.
