Hi All,

One of the issues with the Lotus I'm working on buying is that it has
a scratch in the windshield, apparently out of the line of sight.
These windshields are tough to find and expensive. I suspect that the
scratch is from the tip of a wiper arm but I'm working on getting
confirmation.

The current owner was told by a relative who works in the glass
industry that it could be polished out using various grades of pumice.

Does anyone have any experience with this, or head of doing this?

Thanks,
Scott

For what it's worth: Last week I had my Talbot windscreen out of the car for
Smith Glass to re-mount in the newly chromed frame. I ask them if they could
polish out a wiper arch. They politely declined and opined that it might be
best to leave it alone. They suggested that these polish operations seldom
end with a better windscreen.

I called Smith Glass too and they said that if it was short (a few
inches), it would be worth doing. But for something long like a wiper
scratch (at the very tip of the wiper), it would be cheaper to buy a
new windshield. Note that they were assuming they would be doing the
polishing, not me...

I'll have a look at the scratch to see if I can't live with it for a
while, otherwise I'll contact a place in Eugene before trying a few
things before purchasing a new windshield.

It's interesting what Lotus owners consider "totally re-done", not
just in my purchase but in others I've researched or discussed with
owners. There are numerous little things still to do on this "totally
re-done" Lotus, probably the biggest being new carpeting and some seat
work. The undercarriage, engine, paint & dashboard are definitely all
re-done though.
