Subject: Action Alert, Saturday Juneteenth Celebration, Minutes attached

Friends,

1. Action Alerts
HJM 2-amended <http://www.oregonwethepeople.org/hjm2.html> with the two MTA
pillars----it is not yet too late to call or write Tina Kotek, Speaker of
the House, imploring her to allow this bill calling for a Constitutional
convention to have a vote in the House Rules committee.
Her Salem office phone: 503-986-1200 (her aides are very nice, or call after
hours and leave a message if shy!); rep.ti...@state.or.us.

Again, the 28th Amendment bill (HJR 48) has been introduced in the current
session of Congress. It can be found here:
https://movetoamend.org/wethepeopleamendment. Please contact DeFazio's
office 202-225-6416 and urge him to co-sponsor HJR 48 along with
Representatives Nolan, Pocan, Huffman, Cartwright, Ellison, and Grijalva!

Together, we can help make progress toward a better world for all!

2. June 20: Juneteenth Community Picnic and Celebration
On this Saturday, June 20, there will be a Juneteenth
<http://www.juneteenth.com/history.htm> (June 19th) Community Picnic and
Celebration, sponsored by the Corvallis branch of the NAACP and many
cosponsors, including the City of Corvallis King Legacy Advisory Board. The
picnic is scheduled from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park,
in and near the large shelter (park in the lot off of 53rd Street). There
will be a picnic-style BBQ with veggie burgers, beef hotdogs, and pulled
pork BBQ provided, as well as buns, condiments, and place settings.
Attendees are encouraged to bring potluck sidedishes, desserts, or beverages
to share. There will be supervised children's activities, games, music,
dancing, and two excellent presentations by the wonderful Shelley Moon and
Dr. Calvin O.L. Henry. Suggested donation is $5. This is a great opportunity
to support multi-culturalism in our community, which is related to our MTA
goal of building a "multi-racial" movement to strengthen our democracy. Bart
and I are involved. We hope to see you there!!

Juneteenth <http://www.juneteenth.com/history.htm> is often referred to as
African American Emancipation Day. It may be surprising for some that July
4th is not quite as meaningful an Independence Day for the descendents of
enslaved Americans as it is for many others. Juneteenth commemorates the
ending of slavery in this country and is an official state holiday in many
states. It commemorates June 19, 1865, when the enslaved people of Texas
were finally and publically INFORMED that they had been freed by President
Lincoln. This happened two and a half years after President Lincoln had
officially emancipated the enslaved people in that state.
