In this collaboration, we identify the critical engagement across institutions necessary to make explicit our pedagogical knowledge. We draw on our experiences working as the organizers of a three-part cross-institutional exchange cross-institutional exchange of high school, community college, and university writing instructors to identify motivations and constraints for our past and future work of this kind. We situate this activity in the context of our current teaching landscape, both political and economic, to ask how cross-institutional collaboration and solidarity can amplify access and advocacy for best pedagogical practices across institutions and grade levels. With a long-term intention to activate what Becker and Toth call "writing transfer ecologies," we ask how can such professional networks be revived, extended, and sustained in Michigan.
At this time, we invite you to join the Schoology page below, a resource created by teachers for teachers in Macomb County, and begin to share example assignments from courses you teach. Please be sure to include on any assignment shared the COURSE, the LEARNING GOALS OR OUTCOMES, and the GRADE LEVEL/INSTITUTION LEVEL. Ideally, you will also include a rationale for how and why the assignment works.
When we meet at Corridors, we invite collaborative participants to bring knowledge about existing and previous writing networks (Michigan Writing Network, National Writing Project, etc.) to shape a productive conversation about the possibilities and limitations of K-16+ writing networks and implications for instructional autonomy.
