While trolling was once relegated to the darker corners of the internet (originating on message boards such as 4chan), it is now a ubiquitous aspect of public discourse. As scholars concerned with language, writing, and culture, how should we teach students to engage with this problematic discursive trend? Can trolling be used to enact positive social change? If so, how can it be used in the classroom? Is it a strategy that is too negative to be productive? If so, how should we prepare students to combat trolling?
In my presentation, I hope to provide an overview of scholarly work in rhetoric and writing studies dealing with trolling in order to address some of these questions.
