Las controversias sobre la responsabilidad y las consecuencias del cambio climático han situado al clima en el centro del debate público, lo que ha estimulado la realización de estudios sobre su caracterización, impactos, adaptación y mitigación. Ante las transformaciones planetarias, los investigadores de las humanidades han buscado cada vez más situar los fenómenos atmosféricos en el centro de sus análisis con el objetivo de comprender las complejas interdependencias entre el planeta, la vida y el clima en múltiples escalas. El clima y sus cambios se viven, se experimentan y se conceptualizan de diversas maneras a lo largo del tiempo y del espacio, lo que exige un análisis histórico.
Este dossier busca contribuciones que exploren las intersecciones entre las crisis climáticas y sus consecuencias sociales, preguntándose sobre las potencialidades de las discusiones impulsadas por diferentes campos de la historia y las humanidades. Son bienvenidos artículos que aborden cambios históricos en las percepciones científicas, filosóficas, humanísticas, culturales y mediáticas sobre el clima, su variabilidad y sus transformaciones, tanto en el pasado como en el presente. Esto incluye disputas entre narrativas y experiencias que han sustentado explicaciones sobre el mundo, los seres no humanos y sus fenómenos, las comunidades y su historia, influyendo en políticas coloniales, nacionales e internacionales, así como en la formación de redes de investigación.
También son bienvenidos artículos que investiguen cómo los eventos climáticos se relacionan con los cambios sociales, las estructuras políticas y económicas, las vulnerabilidades y la resiliencia; cómo dichos eventos producen e impactan en conflictos, epidemias y otras crisis; cómo distintos grupos construyen narrativas y memorias de estos eventos y participan en la esfera pública; y los conflictos entre diferentes formas de saber y de vivir—incluidas las no occidentales—en relación con el cambio climático.

We invite submissions for the special issue “Climate Crises and Social Consequences: Theory, History, Historiography” in the Brazilian journal Tempo e Argumento, until December 15, 2025.
Tempo e Argumento publishes articles in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. It is devoted to the field of History of the Present.

Controversies over responsibility for, and the consequences of, climate change have placed climate at the center of public debate, stimulating studies on characterization, impacts, adaptation, and mitigation. In the face of planetary transformations, scholars in the humanities have increasingly sought to bring atmospheric phenomena from the margins to the center of their analyses, aiming to understand the complex interdependencies between planet, life, and climate across multiple scales. Climate and its changes are experienced, lived, and conceptualized in diverse ways across different times and places—calling for context-specific historical analysis and research.
This special issue seeks contributions that explore the intersections between climate crises and their social consequences asking what potential lies in discussions shaped by different fields of history and the humanities. We welcome articles that address historical changes in perceptions—scientific, philosophical, humanistic, cultural, and media-related—about climate, its variability, and transformations, in both the past and present. These include contested sets of narratives and experiences that have underpinned explanations about the world, nonhuman beings and phenomena, peoples, and history across different groups, informing colonial, national, and international policies as well as the formation of research networks.
We also welcome articles that investigate how climatic events relate to social change, political and economic structures, vulnerabilities and resilience; how such events produce and impact conflicts, epidemics, and other crises; how different groups construct narratives and memories of these events and engage in the public sphere; and the conflicts between different ways of knowing and living—including non-Western ones—in relation to climate change.
