This role serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on enterprise data warehouse (EDW/DWH) content and key insurance source systems, ensuring accurate interpretation of insurance data, consistent business definitions, regulatory alignment, and reliable reporting outputs.

This position requires deep Commercial P&C industry experience, not just reporting expertise. The ideal candidate must demonstrate:

  • Strong functional knowledge of Commercial P&C lines of business
  • Hands-on familiarity with insurance source systems, particularly:
    • Guidewire PolicyCenter
    • Guidewire ClaimCenter
    • Guidewire BillingCenter (working knowledge)
    • Genius
    • SAP
  • Clear understanding of how insurance data is generated in source systems and how it flows into the enterprise data warehouse
  • Ability to articulate data lineage, transformations, reconciliation logic, and business rules

High-level insurance knowledge is insufficient. The successful candidate must be able to connect commercial insurance operations to underlying data structures and warehouse models.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as a data and domain SME for P&C insurance subject areas, including policy, claims, billing, and financial data.
  • Demonstrate expertise in Commercial P&C lines, including but not limited to:
    • Commercial Auto
    • General Liability
    • Workers’ Compensation
    • Commercial Property
    • Umbrella / Excess
    • Inland Marine
    • Professional Liability
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather, clarify, and validate reporting and data extract requirements.
  • Translate insurance business concepts into accurate data logic, KPIs, metrics, and dimensional definitions.
  • Leverage knowledge of source applications (Guidewire, Genius, SAP) to ensure correct data interpretation, lineage, and traceability.
  • Explain how commercial policy lifecycle events (submission, quote, bind, issue, endorsement, renewal, cancellation, reinstatement) are represented in source system data.
  • Analyze claims lifecycle data including reserves, payments, recoveries, and claim financials.
  • Ensure reports and extracts align with approved business definitions, regulatory requirements, and data governance standards.
  • Create and validate complex SQL queries, views, and semantic-layer objects against the enterprise data warehouse.
  • Review and certify reports for accuracy, reconciliation, completeness, and consistency across source systems and the warehouse.
  • Investigate and resolve data discrepancies by tracing issues through source systems, integration layers, and ETL processes.
  • Document data definitions, lineage, business rules, mappings, and reporting assumptions.
  • Support UAT efforts and partner with data engineering teams to resolve defects and enhance reporting capabilities.
  • Educate business users on proper interpretation and usage of commercial insurance data and reporting outputs.
  • Follow established communication channels and escalation paths when addressing data or reporting issues.

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • 14+ years of experience as a hands-on IT Reporting Data Analyst.
  • 4+ years of experience in reporting or data analysis within the Property & Casualty insurance industry (Commercial lines strongly preferred).
  • Reinsurance experience preferred but not required.
  • 3+ years hands-on experience with:
    • Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy)
    • Microsoft Power BI
    • Or similar BI/reporting platforms
  • Working knowledge of insurance source systems such as:
    • Guidewire (Policy, Billing, Claims)
    • Genius
    • SAP
  • Strong SQL skills with experience querying enterprise data warehouses.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Source-to-target mappings
    • Data lineage
    • Enterprise data warehouse architecture
    • Dimensional modeling (facts, dimensions, aggregations)
    • Enterprise reporting concepts
  • Ability to reconcile data between transactional systems and warehouse environments.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong initiative; able to self-manage in complex environments.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and able to work through it to deliver accurate, business-aligned outcomes.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), with clear understanding of communication channels and escalation paths.
  • Proven experience working directly with senior business stakeholders and cross-functional IT teams.
  • Ability to explain complex data concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Recognized as a trusted insurance and data SME.
