Research in the architectural humanities rarely moves in a straight line. It develops through fragments of observation, incomplete archives, tentative sketches, unexpected encounters, and reflections that may never make their way into a finished thesis or publication. This symposium, En Chantiers: Field Notes in Progress, foregrounds the provisional and the unfinished as productive spaces of inquiry. By placing emphasis on field notes; broadly understood as the marks, traces, and records of ongoing research, this symposium invites doctoral students to reflect on how knowledge is gathered, tested, and re-shaped in practice. Participants are encouraged to share snapshots and assemblages of their current work: questions that remain unresolved, methods under construction, and the contingent moments that shape the research journey. We are particularly interested in contributions that examine how incompleteness, instability, or ambiguity can be mobilised as critical tools within architectural humanities research.
La recherche en humanités architecturales évolue rarement de manière linéaire. Elle se développe à partir de fragments d’observation, d’archives lacunaires, d’esquisses provisoires, de rencontres inattendues et de réflexions qui ne trouveront peut-être jamais leur place dans une thèse ou une publication achevée. Ce symposium, intitulé « En Chantiers : Field Notes in Progress », met en avant le provisoire et l’inachevé comme des espaces productifs d’investigation. En mettant l’accent sur les notes de terrain, entendues au sens large comme les marques, les traces et les registres des recherches en cours, ce symposium invite les doctorants à réfléchir à la manière dont la connaissance est recueillie, mise à l’épreuve et remodelée dans la pratique. Les participantes sont conviées à partager des clichés et des assemblages de leurs travaux actuels : questionnements restés en suspens, méthodes en cours de construction et moments contingents qui façonnent le cheminement de la recherche. Nous sommes particulièrement intéressé.es par les contributions qui examinent comment l’incomplétude, l’instabilité ou l’ambiguïté peuvent être mobilisées comme outils critiques au sein des recherches en humanités architecturales.
The emphasis on research practice for this symposium stems, in part, from an awareness of the growing impact of new digital knowledge tools that operate within other epistemic modes. If such tools, including ‘artificial intelligence’, are used in a contribution, their use and role should be made explicit and critically examined in the proposal itself.
Applicants may wish to consider (but are not limited to) the following areas of inquiry:
Divagation: Fieldwork and Methods
- Negotiating positionality, subjectivity, and authorship in architectural research
- Failures, gaps, and uncertainties as productive aspects of methodology
- Leftovers and discarded pieces of research
- Unfinished, abandoned, or repurposed architectural projects
- Temporality, ephemerality, destruction and (climate) change in built and natural environments
- Intuition, slowness and irrationality as modes of research
Récits: Narratives and Representation
- Visual, sonic, or performative modes of documenting research-in-progress
- Field notes as creative writing, fiction, or poetic practice
- Narratives for sustainable pasts and futures
Conscience: Ethics and Responsibility
- The ethics of observing, recording, and representing communities or places
- Reflexivity and care in dealing with sensitive or contested sites
- Critical reflection on experiences with ‘artificial intelligence’ tools, potentials and risks in relation to architectural humanities research
L’accent mis sur la pratique de la recherche dans ce symposium découle, en partie, de la prise de conscience de l’impact croissant des nouveaux outils numériques de connaissance qui opèrent selon d’autres modes épistémiques. Si de tels outils, y compris « l’intelligence artificielle », sont employés dans une contribution, leur utilisation et leur rôle doivent être explicités et examinés de façon critique dans la proposition elle-même.
Les candidates pourront envisager (sans s’y limiter) les axes de recherche suivants :
Divagation : travail de terrain et méthodes
- Négociation de la positionnalité, de la subjectivité et de l’auctorialité dans la recherche architecturale.
- Les échecs, les écarts et les incertitudes comme aspects productifs de la méthodologie.
- Les résidus et les fragments écartés de la recherche.
- Les projets architecturaux inachevés, abandonnés ou réaffectés.
- Temporalité, éphémérité , destruction et changements (climatiques) des environnements bâtis et naturels.
- L’intuition, la lenteur et l’irrationalité comme modes de recherche.
Récits : narrativité et représentation
- Modes visuels, sonores ou performatifs de la documentation de la recherche en cours.
- Les notes de terrain sous forme d’écriture créative, de fiction ou de pratique poétique.
- Récits critiques de passés et de futurs durables.
Conscience : éthique et responsabilité
- Ethique de l’observation, de la documentation et de la représentation des communautés et des lieux.
- Réflexivité et soin face aux sites sensibles ou contestés.
- Réflexion critique sur les expériences menées avec les outils d’intelligence artificielle, leurs potentialités et leurs risques dans le champ des humanités architecturales.

Scholars are invited to submit abstract proposals of no more than 300 words / Les chercheurses sont invité.es à soumettre des propositions de résumés ne dépassant pas 300 mots.

The symposium will consist of paper sessions and workshops. Paper sessions will consist of 15 minute presentations. Workshops are structured for three-minute ‘snapshots’ of an issue, interest, or curiosity followed by a discussion. / Le symposium comprendra des sessions de communications et des workshops. Les sessions de communications consisteront en des exposés de 15 minutes. Les workshops seront structurés autour de « clichés » de trois minutes sur une problématique, un intérêt ou une curiosité, suivis de discussions.

Sessions will be held in person at one location, and broadcast online to the other two locations / Les sessions se dérouleront en présentiel à tour de rôle dans chacun de ces lieux et seront diffusées en ligne dans les deux autres
Participation is free / La participation est gratuite
When submitting a proposal, participants will select the location where they would like to present in person. Presentations will be live-streamed in the other locations. / Lors de la soumission d’une proposition, les participants sélectionneront le lieu dans lequel ils /elles souhaitent présenter en présentiel. Symposium Organisation: 3-in-1
The symposium takes place in three locations that are digitally wired together. This experimental new format will necessarily entail various detours, creative solutions, messy translations and is in itself a work-in-progress, as we together re-invent the symposium. The use of different languages further adds to the bridging nature of the event. We hope that this physical-digital symposium contributes to finding new research relations between researchers and research groups in the hubs in Algeria, the Netherlands, Britain, and beyond.
Organisation du symposium : 3-en-1
Le symposium se déroulera dans trois lieux connectés numériquement. Ce nouveau format expérimental impliquera nécessairement divers détours, des solutions créatives, des traductions maladroites, et constitue en soi un chantier en cours, dans la mesure où nous réinventons ensemble le symposium. L’utilisation de différentes langues accentue davantage la vocation de rapprochement prônée par cet événement. Nous espérons que ce symposium physique-digital contribuera à forger de nouvelles relations de recherche entre les chercheur.euse.s et les groupes de recherche des pôles en Algérie, aux Pays-Bas, dans la région britannique, et au-delà.
