Peter Blundell-Jones: Architecture, Landscape and the City

Western Bank Library / University of Sheffield

21 July – 14 December 2025.

The exhibition looks at Peter's architectural journey through his writings, research and practice. Also offers the rare chance to see the amazing, detailed model of Sheffield city centre in 1900.

This fascinating exhibition celebrates the life, work and legacy of the late British architect, writer, and teacher Peter Blundell Jones who taught at the University of Sheffield School of Architecture. Peter, or PBJ as he was fondly known, has been described as the pre-eminent architectural historian of his generation.

Using documents, plans and photographs from the Peter Blundell Jones Archive, the exhibition explores Peter’s early influences and how these developed over his long and successful academic career. It also examines Peter’s own architectural practice, focussing on three buildings he lovingly designed for his family.

As well as a writer and an architect, Peter was an inspiring teacher, who communicated his passion for his subject to thousands of students. His pet project was a study of Sheffield as it was in 1900, where students created a scale model of a section of the city.

This exhibition offers the rare chance to see this impressively detailed model of Sheffield at the height of its industrial power.
