API/Method to open a single file via URL

Hi--I've been able to use the OHIF viewer to load local files in my deployment. I'm looking to issue a URL call to do so without either dragging and dropping or manually clicking on an upload button. Ideally, something like:

http://ohif.myserver.com:3000/viewer?url=file:///tmp/1-2.dcm

It is crucial that my approach does *not* use a PACs or other DICOM-based storage--rather, that I can call it with single non-catalogued or managed files.

Does any methodology like this exist and I just cannot find the hook yet?
