Dear Mr. President,

As demonstrations continue in the streets of Egypt against a three decade long dictatorship, we ask our government, the United States government, to directly promote a transition to a democratically elected government truly representative of its constituency. Now, more than ever, America has the opportunity to redeem itself in Egypt and the entire Middle East. In order to thwart the risk of anti-American sentiment and maintain a strong strategic alliance with Egypt, all we have to do is act on the very same ideals that are part of America's own foundation.

During five American administrations, Mubarak has told us that we must settle for a brutal and oppressive regime in order to avoid having a new anti-American extremist state. This is not true. The people of Egypt are overwhelmingly moderate. They want good relations with the United States, not just because this ensures economic stability, but because America symbolizes freedoms and liberties that are desired by all people. You must know this yourself, Mr. President. At your Cairo University speech in 2009, all of Egypt displayed affection for you and the United States. This is your opportunity to fulfill promises, made directly and indirectly, which will prove beneficial for the United States and the entire region.

During Mubarak’s reign, the United States lost much credibility in the region. The United States must now shape its policies in the Middle East guided by the common principles that our founding fathers fought and died for. We must believe that if we act in good faith and do not turn our backs on democratically elected governments, as we have in the past, the people will develop a trust that will allow us to play a more positive and stabilizing role in the region while securing our own national interests.

In your inaugural message, you warned: “those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history.” Please, do not let us be on the wrong side of history.
