Hmm.. not sure. MC2 has been released by Microsoft as a free source game, so, it is ver.1 I guess (?
I installed MC2 on my another PC which is win7, direct install, no patch, it works fine with Dgvoodoo2. But that PC is in my office.... that means I can't play it at home. ?
I saw many players can play MC2 on Win10 with Dgvoodoo2 perfectly... wondering why I can't. Q_Q Must lack of something, I guess...

DirectDraw is tried to be initialized on the logical primary monitor, but it seems to return E_FAIL, cannot be initialized for some reason.
It can easily happen when D3D11 can't be started up (hw doesn't have DX10.0 support at least), or invalid adapter or output or virtual card is coming from dgVoodoo's config file.

Don't you have a local dgVoodoo config in your game folder, which contains invalid adapter/output settings for the given machine?
I mean, e.g. you created a config on a two-monitor system with second output selected in dgv CPL, and then copied it to the given machine having one monitor.

Hi, Dege, thank you for your help, truly.
Sorry I didn't get you well...(very sad for my poor English...ah...)
Both of my PCs (at office and home) are two-monitor system, but the game can run perfectly with the one in my office.
The difference is that the two-monitor system in my office is VGA+DVI(DVI convert to VGA monitor), and in my home it is HDMI+DVI(still DVI convert to VGA monitor). Both PCs system setting are extend the Desktop.

13, July, 2017 update:
I tried to install the game on my laptop, it works, perfectly.
The laptop's OS is Win10 Pro-edition, which is different from the one I use at home. Also the OS on my PC in the office is Win 7 Pro-edition.
I'm starting to wonder if the error message was caused by the OS edition...however I'm not expert in this area, still need you guys help to clarify the problem.

According to the error log coming from the game, the following thing happens: DirectDraw is wanted to be created and initialized on the primary monitor, but dgVoodoo returns an error code (E_FAIL) which only means 'general failure'.
I've quickly looked at the code to see what situations can cause that, and those are the following:

- Out of memory (I really doubt that this is the case)
- Another dgVoodoo component is present next to DDraw.dll (e.g. Glide2x.dll for Glide) but they are of different versions. They cannot be used together so one of them will simply refuse to work (by design).
- An invalid adapter ('Adapters to use/enable' on the CPL) is selected in dgVoodoo's config file (file is corrupted or copied from another machine that has more GPU's than the one in question), so D3D11 cannot be initialized
- An invalid output ('Full Screen' on CPL on the General tab) is selected in dgVoodoo's config file, because of the same reason
- D3D11 cannot be initialized because the underlying GPU of the selected adapter doesn't meet the needed criteria (DX10.0 compatibility at least), or some D3D11 objects cannot be created for some (display driver related) reason.

Roughly that's all. Plz check if those conditions aren't met for your machine, the operating system version doesn't matter.
Also, you can try if dgVoodoo works for you with others stuffs to see if it's a general problem.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work even on the latest hotfix driver and who knows if Nvidia is even aware of whatever is causing this issue or has any desire to fix it. I guess we just have to hope it also affects some important game.

But since OP has a Nvidia GPU and Windows 10, he should check his driver version and try and older one if it's newer than 378.92. I'm very curious what GPU, Windows build and driver version OP is running.

Would you like to play old MechCommander Gold in wide resolution? You can in 4 new resolutions:- 1024x768,- 1440x900,- 1600x900,- 1920x1080.There is MCG original and expansion campaign, plus 3 sets of 2 preinstalled custom campaigns.

Technical Issues of an old game!

MechCommander Gold - Desperate Measures v1.8 was released 1999. There came up several new Windows systems and other OS since MCG-DM was released. Through all that Versions MechCommander survived - with casualties. The editor for example can only be used on a physical install of MechCommander. Windows 98 up to Windows 7 user found solutions to physically install the game. Windows 8/10 users actually can not properly physicall install - but they can play the game with a pre-installed game folder. So for first that is reason, editor doesnt work on new OS. The only system i can run it is a physical Windows 98 system, Pentium-II processor.
So why im telling that? MCG-DM v1.8 was the last official release for MechCommander. It got abandoned. A pre-installed game folder came up for vanilla game (2001-2006), three new pre-installed standalone versions where released by magic around 2006 with six more campaigns available to play. 2017 i released the first in-official Update for raw original pre-installed game folders. Some months later i introduced MechCommander Gold -Darkest Hours - Standalone & The-Repulse Standalone.

Well all those versions have one in common: Bugs, crashes and several technical issues, especially when it comes over to how to use resolutions right on MechCommander and how to workaround certain and reproducable bugs. Certain objects and waypaths, certain actions in MechBay while configuring Mechs - can cause game into crashes. I will try to elaborate the most important of them by giving handy workaround solutions to evade crashes before they happening.

The most important bugs / critical situations

On 4.0 from moddb, the mission in the original campaign to capture crate group A and B is bugged. No mission markers appear for the crate groups appear, and the 4 crates that are capturable dont fufill mission requirements. You can also activate the extraction before the primaries are completed, but the mission doesnt end.

There are defintely all crates reachable. It is a usermade mission from the usermade standalone versions. The mission is technically one of the worst of the whole campaign i have to admit - but it is still possible to walkthrough when you keep away from the streets (waypoint bug) and use a jump mech to get all crates.

The mission is exactly the same mission as vanilla version - only difference is that players of Darkest Hours may have a Raven when original campaign players dont. So this bug was reported and it is possible to walkaround by using NO RAVEN for your lance in this mission. Simple solution.

2017 i started to mod MechCommander Gold myself. The backbone for my modded content was a clean Original MechCommander Gold Expansion Version v1.8. Most things i needed to start modding MechCommander wayback i found on NoGutsNoGalaxy.net webpage - which got purged during 2019. Not only my modded MechCommander content & information - but although any other helpful modding information and software got lost that day. But it doesn't matter. I have backups of most of the lost content. When we talk about MechCommander the game itself - it's several standalone version builts - this already happened yet. I have reuploaded all the player's content here on ModDB - including all MechCommander game knowledge articles and mirrored this information to MechCommander Gold - Darkest Hours - new hoster: EveryThingBattleTech.com ! In the EveryThingBT-forums you have access to all valuable MechCommander Ingame information you might search for. Although here on ModDB you can find this information - plus ALL available MechCommander downloads & content for the game.

2020 now we have the best modding conditions for MechCommander, that ever existed. On the base of the modding knowledge above i have created another standalone for MechCommander called Darkest Hours (v4.2). MCG Darkest Hours combines all previous common standalone versions into one built containing two Extra Large XXL campaigns overriding the Original and Expansion campaigns from the game. Instead of 42 missions total from the original game - you can play 131 campaign missions total! In addition there are several optional updates & patches available for Darkest Hours and the biggest solo-mission map pack - that ever existed. The Fullversion of Darkest Hours exists since 2018 on modDb and was downloaded about five thousand times yet. The Original version on modDB since about 2015 has not much more downloads anymore. So the game itself evolved in an awesome way! The modding knowledge is still a problem - cause at the moment i think i'm one of the last guys on earth knowing how to do this stuff - beside some rare other persons who know more about this old gem.
