Royals in the Neighbourhood

Here's the schedule for Prince Charles and Camilla's visit to the neighbourhood tomorrow.  I see they are attending a War of 1812 event, does anybody know when Corktown's 1812's events are taking place?  There was a lot of planning and talking going on at the Corktown Meetings a couple of years ago but I have yet to hear when these events are happening.  I'd appreciate the schedule.

The Royal itinerary
Monday
5:10 p.m. Royals arrive at Pearson
9:10 p.m. Charles and Camilla arrive at Ashbridge’s Bay via RCMP vessel to watch fireworks. Mayor Rob Ford in attendance.
Tuesday — Toronto
10:10 a.m. — Catch a glimpse of Charles and Camilla as they are greeted curbside at Queen’s Park, before heading inside for Lieutenant Governor’s Diamond Jubilee medal ceremony and reception.
11:05 a.m. — The Prince of Wales is sans Duchess for his tour of the Digital Media Zone at Ryerson University
11:05 a.m. — Camilla arrives at the Moss Park digs of The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada for her first visit as Colonel-in-Chief. Meets with members, unveils portrait of herself, makes remarks.
12:05 p.m. — Prince Charles tours the Pan/Parapan American Athletes’ Village with Premier Dalton McGuinty.
12:45 p.m. — After a brief stroll through the Distillery District with the premier (the Prince is a heritage preservation buff), Charles is reunited with Camilla for the Government of Ontario Reception at the Distillery District. Ford in attendance.
1:50 p.m. — While the Duchess takes a break at the hotel, Prince Charles tours the Yonge Street Mission. He will then ride a TTC hybrid bus to his next stop at UforChange in St. James Town.
3:25 p.m. — Prince meets with Assembly of First Nations at the Royal York Hotel, then he takes a break for a few hours.
6 p.m. — Charles and Camilla arrive at the Fort York Armoury for the 1812 Commemorative Military Muster — hosted by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. They leave the soiree at 7:30 p.m. for the airport.
8 p.m. — Departure from Pearson.

Hi Linda.

 

I checked with some Board members involved before I was even in Corktown and there has been nothing I can find that was discussed or arranged about 1812 bi-centennial celebrations in Corktown since about 2008.  We have been active in the last couple of years in participating in the initiative to have the first Parliament site returned to public ownership with some form of permanent remembrance, but that is not solely related to the bi-centennial.

 

It would have been a great idea to have a made-in-Corktown event but the volunteer Board is pretty much overloaded as it is with longer-term initiatives on-going and there are plenty of 1812 celebrations going on in any event.

The CRBA did receive a late invite to one event below– however, all of us are working tomorrow.  Thanks for the itinerary anyway.

I have to admit I was surprised that all of the Corktown Membership was not available for such an important event!  I would think that all the years that you spent as a member of Corktown and the many years as secretary would have certainly justified a phone call in my opinion.  I know you lived in England at some point and I am sure this would have been a thrill for you!

I can remember when the Queen drove along Shuter St. in the 50's and how excited we were to see her as she drove by in a convertible.  My grandmother (England War Bride) took me to City Hall to see her, the crowds were huge.  In the '70's, my mother was invited to Tea with the Queen Mother and I was allowed to go as her guest.  I guess the younger generation does not see the relevance of the Royals and how they were very much part of our heritage.

Full disclosure: I am not on the current CRBA Board, but was previously, and I am speaking on my own behalf without consulting anyone.

Please all remember the CRBA Board are volunteers working to improve your neighbourhood. So let's adjust the expectations accordingly. I for one have always been thankful for any amount of time that any person of good will puts in to the community.

I found that any constructive criticism has always been welcomed and treated appropriately and respectfully by this Board. So if you have complaints, best send an email to in...@corktown.ca. I don't think below was grave enough to merit a public Internet bashing of these community volunteers.

I personally know the members of the current Board and respect their judgement. They have received the confidence of the membership in February. They have set priorities and are getting results on very important projects that we will all benefit from. 

So meanwhile this current Board has my full confidence, I think they are doing a great job actually. 

I recommend that if anyone notices room for improvement, do the active thing and volunteer even more to help the CRBA and our community improve -  there is lots to do so I am sure you will be received with open arms!

Llinda, your mother, Edna Dixon, was instrumental in keeping Trefann (north Corktown) from becoming another Regent or Moss Park as the city tried to make it.
Someone has to do a bio of this remarkable woman. 
Wish I could have known her.
