Here is an interesting article from the Star about former mayors and development.

Playing politics transformed the GTAPoliticians of all stripes, from City Hall to Parliament Hill, have had significant impact on the building of new homes in the GTA.

If anybody is wondering why we have become the "Vertical Concrete Jungle Capital", here is your answer.  It's interesting to see how the city once tried to preserve existing low rise residential neighbourhoods and has now replaced low rise housing, specifically in Regent Park with very tall apartments buildings that are twice the size of the existing 13 stories.  When I watch the vapours spew out their chimneys, I visualize the similarities of the chimneys that once existed in the portlands.

I believe the planner mentioned in the article was Howard Cohen who was involved in Trefann years ago.  If my memory serves me right he got into a lot of trouble with one of his projects for cutting down existing trees.  As many of you know they cut down more trees by the arena in Regent a few weeks ago.  I am still perplexed as to why the city is allowing this, when just a few weeks ago I attended a meeting in Cabbagetown to build a Medical Centre.  There were no parking spaces included in the plans because the only available space was where a tree stands and cannot be cut down.

What's good for one is definitely not good for all in the Lower Downtown Eastside.
