CORK SAYS ENOUGH!
The recent election has shown to the Irish Political elite that the public are demanding change! But far from providing the change the public wanted the FG/Labour, just like the last FF/Green coalition, CHOOSE to make the low to middle income earners pay for the mistakes of the bankers and developers. This is an easy option for them as it leaves their friends, the wealthy in society, off the hook. Cork Says Enou...gh is a brand new initiative created by existing campaigns/organisations in Cork, linking up with the rest of the country as part of the ENOUGH! Campaign.
We took the new government’s commitment to protect the less well off in society at face value. It turns out that FG and labour can lie as well, if not better than FF. Joan Burton, a Labour party minister, may have the money to make lifestyle choices but we don’t.
The household charge of €100 being introduced for a person on €188 a week is 1% of their payment. For anyone on minimum or an average wage, it’s just as bad. A TD gets about €1,700 a week not counting expenses and heads of Semi-states can be on up to €750,000. The flat charge will see such people paying the same, regardless of income. This is on top of the Universal Social Charge and before the introduction of the Water Tax.
It is time we took a leaf out of the pensioners’ book and say enough is enough! But to do that we need to organise. And we need the politicians to hear our voices. With more cuts to social welfare on the way and the price of everything going up we must stand up for ourselves. Now is the time for the people of Cork to join the rest of Ireland and help in changing this government’s mindset. The time for action is now.
