Unknown file format opening word xp document

I am trying to open an word xp doc using wordperfect 9. It starts to
do a "file conversion" but then I receive an error message "unknown
file format" I have confirmed the necessary conversion filters are
installed.

I am starting to think that a filter for word xp did not ship with wp9
any help is appreciated.
