I have checked the printer properties file, and the settings are those
which work with every other program: Paper size, 8.5 x 11; Portrait;
Autoselect (I tried setting it to lower tray with no success).
Eventually, if I make changes to the document, or changes to the
properties -- inconsistent changes) and reset the printer, it will
eventually print the document using paper from the proper tray, the
loaded lower tray. But it's frustrating.
Has anybody else had this problem? Can anybody suggest a proper
explanation or solution? This printing problem occurs only in
WordPerfect 8, and not in Word, Notepad or Write.

2) Make sure you have WP8's SP5 installed.
3) Turn on "Reformat document for the WordPerfect default printer on open".
If you don't have this on, and the document was originally edited with any
other printer def., it won't have a way to "find" the right printer for the
document. Use Tools/Settings, Environment, and check the box.

WP8's SP5 (short name used by those who type it a few zillion times a day) is
service patch #5 for the suite. It is an approx.13 MB file that can be critical
to proper operation & stability in WP8.
First you MUST have WP8 version 8.0.0.225 or later, as shown in Help/About within
the program. If your version is earlier, get a replacement CD right away from
Corel, which costs $9.95 for s/h only. The pre-225 version is just too unstable
& can't even be patched to make it comparable to the current program. (You get
CC8 thrown in for free, too, but some users think that Corel should pay *you* for
that.)
Once you have installed a 225-or-later version, you should apply the latest
service pack. For reliability etc., versions 8.0.0.484 -and-later are best;
this represents WP8 with SP4 applied. SP5 brings it up to .610 or .611 (depends
on product version) and also includes improved conversion between WP8 & Word97.
If you already have a version of WP8 that is 8.0.0.225-or-later, you can just
download SP5 to update your install to the latest version. The update is
available from
http://www.corel.com/support/ftpsite/pub/wordperfect/wpwin/8/cwps8.htm (choose
wp8sp5.exe, of course).
[Note there are a few small exceptions about applying JUST SP5; with older Dutch
versions, for example, SP2 fixes a specific problem that does not seem to be
incorporated into SP5.]
Hope that clarifies. Now get your modem going!!

And now I'll keep my modem going downloading the necessary patches to get WP 8 up to
date.
Thank you again.

Any ideas anybody?
If so, install a new copy of the HPLJ4+ driver by defining a new printer & not using the
current driver. Set that driver as default under Windows. See if that has the same
problems.
BTW I have a 4+ too, no problem w/WP8.

My guess is that you have a letterhead or legal-size page definition. WP
typically directs those page sizes to the manual feed on your printer.

On the printer itself, make sure you have the MP tray set to "first"
instead of to "tray". This should mean that if something requests a
letter-sized paper without the "default" location, it would pull
from the MP tray only if there is paper there, otherwise should
substituted tray #1.
To do this :
Press On-line to go off-line
Press Menu button 3(?) times to get to Config menu
Press Item button if necessary until you get MP Tray= ....
Press -/+ button to get "=FIRST" showing (instead of Cass or Manual)
Press Enter to select First as the setting
Go back online.
If the MP tray is set to "cass" or "manual" and the MP paper size is
set to Letter on the printer, ALL documents which don't match
exactly an existing paper size NAME (not just the size) associated
with pulling from Tray #1 would want to feed from MP. For example,
something with a "Standard" code & 8.5x11 size from WP5.1 would fit
this category. But if MP is "first" the unidentified but
letter-sized paper codes should pull from tray 1 instead.
But you should just be able to select the entry corresponding to the right
orientation, if it doesn't auto-select. Or you can create a "custom"
paper type of that size, that would offer both orientations from one
definition as everything but "letter" does.
