What are you going to use for a mail client? That will determine the
ultimate answer.

I use Netscape Messenger 4.76 right now. I have Outlook Express 5.5 setup but
do not use it. I also do not use Netscape's Mapi but Microsoft's mapi32.dll.
Mike Schneier
Well, because it's newer, you're probably going to have to rename that
MAPI32.DLL, do the install, then name it back after the install.
This *may* work or you might also have to copy WMSUI.DLL to
%systemroot%\system32\.
The only reason for the rename is because the install thinks it's "out of
date" when in actuality it's too new.
BTW, I should've mentioned, if you are not going to run from an account
w/administrator privileges, there can be some issues. At the very least,
you *must* have Power User status to run WP8, and have access to the
%systemroot% directory or else turn off print history or else have
explicit rights to the *.{PB files.

Thanks Debra,
Where do I find WMSUI.DLL?
Mike Schneier
Hmmm, I'd forgotten that it's not on the W2K CD. Try it without that
file, first.
Since WP8 does work on W2K, I suspect you will be fine without it ... and
also, I got the name wrong, it is WMSUI32.DLL.
Debra,
I just learned that Microsoft might have an upgrade to Windows Messaging
for Windows 2000. It's called a HOTFIX. If they do when would I install it
before or after I install the Core 8 Address Book?

There is a new version of MAPI32 that was recently released with Exchange
Server's SP4, but it won't change the basic situation here.
I don't see a W2K-specific hotfix, either, for MAPI. But you might want
to read this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWS2000/library/resources/reskit/inc/std-download-hotfix.asp
Hi Debra,
As far as the HOTFIX, you have to call Microsoft and request it and they give you some
sort of key to some site and you download it or I guess maybe you can get it on a disk or CD.
But you have not answered my question:
when would I install it before or after I install the Corel 8 Address Book?

Because there isn't a W2K hotfix that addresses the MAPI32 file, I can't
really answer your question since I don't think it applies.
But *all* hotfixes are documented in the MS Knowledge Base -- even if the
files are not generally available without contacting tech support -- and I
have searched there & ensured that there is not one for W2K for this
issue. That's not surprising, actually, since messaging/mapi is
considered a component of the mail client (Outlook, Groupwise, etc.) and
is therefore usually installed with the mail client itself, not as part of
the operating system. [Although Windows NT4 did include an early mail
client, the same client has not been included in W2K and is rarely used in
NT4.]
All I can think of is that perhaps you are thinking of the Exchange SP4.
Where did you hear of this hotfix, anyway?
I think it was the win200.general, win2000.new_user or win2000.application newsgroup.
M. Schneier
The cite refers to the fact that "Messaging" is not included in the
commercial release of W2K, and that one can obtain a messaging component
that is the one that is included for NT4 (and ignore the warnings about
the wrong version) if one wants to, for example, set up a post office &
clients on a peer-to-peer network.
Since WP8's address book seems to require WMSUI32.DLL, at least in most
cases, this would be one source of the file as well as a newer
extended-MAPI32.DLL file.
