I work for a magazine and we get text from our writers who use many of
the older versions of WP (5.1 - 8.0). I'm writing instructions telling
them to turn off Widow/Orphan protect, turn off hyphenation, turn on
smart quotes, and uncheck the format-as-you-go setting that puts 2
spaces after sentences.

Since we use WP 8.0 I can give detailed directions for doing these
things in that version. Unfortunately, I'm not sure which menu
categories contain these functions in earlier WP versions and what the
drop down menus look like once you get the right menu button. Below
are my instructions. Can anyone tell me if they apply to pre 8.0 WP
versions?

Thanks.

-END OF SENTENCE SPACING: Use only 1 space between sentences (Make
sure that your computer is not set to change 1 space between sentences
to 2 spaces automatically. Click on "Tools", click "QuickCorrect",
click "Format-As-You-Go". In the "End of sentence corrections"
section, darken the circle next to "None" and click "Okay".
-TURN ON "SMART QUOTES" a.k.a. curly quotes or typographer's quotes
(click on "Tools",click "QuickCorrect", click "SmartQuotes", check all
three boxes, and click "Okay")
-TURN OFF WIDOW/ORPHAN PROTECT (click "Format", click "Keep Text
Together...", clear all check boxes on this page, click "OK")
-TURN OFF HYPHENATION(click Tools, select "Language", click
"Hyphenation...", uncheck the box next to "Turn hyphenation on"
