I cleaned up my hard drive after finishing a book
and now VP 4.2 will not launch. I guess I removed
something I should not have. The message I get is "The
file you're trying to use as a VP WID file is not in
the standard width table format." When I click OK it
closes down. It seems to be trying to open the default
style in the typeset directory. Occasionally in the
past I have re-created a directory I was using last and
copied the style sheet to it. But this did not work
this time. What now???

Find your vpwin.inf file and delete it (somewhere in the program
installation directories.). There may be more than one, delete them all.
Then start VP again.

This will cause VP to forget whatever file it thinks you used last time, and
it will use defaults and rebuild the vpwin.inf file. You will need to re-do
any customizing of rulers and other interface settings.

If that fails, the quickest thing is usually to wipe and reinstall the
program - only takes two minutes from CD on a modern machine.
