We are using Ventura Publisher 4.1 in Win 3.1

We are applying kerning on certain paragraphs in a chapter (through "Text,
Set font attributes..." and saving it too). But when we return to the
chapter after making changes in another chapter our kerning effect is lost,
in fact it is the effect of the previous chapter we were working on. Are we
making any mistake? We have one style file for the whole book. Do we have to
create individual style files for individual chapters, to preserve kerning?

Kerning (actually tracking as kerning only affects specific pairs of
characters) applied in this manner is applied as text attributes set in the
text file. Changing style sheets should not affect it.

What can affect it:

The file format of the text. Saving text as ASCII is generally safe. Saving
as WordPerfect can cause problems with some text attributes being lost.

Improperly nested attributes. This can occur when you select text that
includes italics and the tracking is applied such that it begins in normal
text and ends in italic text or vice-versa.

Applying tracking attributes to an entire paragraph or more than one
complete paragraph in succession. This can cause the attributes to be lost
when the file is saved and reopened. The correct way to adjust tracking for
an entire paragraph is in the Paragraph Typography settings for the tag.
Select Tracking::Looser or Tighter and entire the percentage of ems to
apply. IF this must be done on selected paragraphs, you will need to create
a new tag for each different setting.

Alternately, apply the text attributes as you are currently doing. but do
not select the last character (period) in the paragraph.
