Assuming you're referring to the Ventura 4.1.1 spelling dictionary, the file
you want is:
spldict.pd
It's the same file for Ventura 5, you just drop it into the <v5-path>/custom
directory. In Ventura 8, they've switched to using the same spell-checking
that is used for Wordperfect. Since you're in the V5 support area, I'm
guessing you don't care about that, though.

Thank's very much indeed. I found it. Now, the next question is; can I
combine two different versions of this file. While waiting for your kind
help, I added quite a large number of new words on the new machine. I
would like to combine the new and the old if possible. Also, I am moving
to v.8, and would like to know if it is possible to export the 4.1.1.
dictionary to v.8. I have several hundred 18th century nautical terms in
the 4.1.1 versions which I would like to carry over to v.8.
Best regards,
As for Ventura 8, yes it is possible but it is a lot more complicated. I
struggled with this for a while before I pinned it down.
First you'll need to install Wordperfect 8. It comes with Ventura 8, but you
have to install it separately. It has its own option on the initial Ventura
install screen.
Next, take your word list and import it into a Wordperfect document. It will
have a lot of hyphens to mark hyphenation points, so remove those. (I'm not
sure you have to, but I did and haven't seen any ill effects.) Save the file
as a Wordperfect 8 document.
Now locate and start the Spelling Utility. On my system it's:
c:\Corel\Graphics8\programs\wpsptlen.exe
but I did custom installs. IIRC, both Ventura and Wordperfect can install this
utility. I let Ventura install it, and it probably winds up in a different
place if Wordperfect installs it. Look for wpsptlen.exe.
Use the Spelling Utility to convert your Wordperfect document to a user word
list (extension .uwl). This is the only conversion that I could get to work. I
first tried to convert from ASCII (then ANSI) but that was a blind alley,
hence the futzing with Wordperfect.
Once the conversion is done, start Ventura and selet the spell checking tool
(CTRL-F8). Select Options and then Add word list, browse to your new .uwl
file, and voila! Done at last.

One easy way to move a custom spellcheck dictionary into Ventura 8 (or any
other program) is simply to create a text file with all your extra words in
it (you can use a cleaned up version of the V4 spellcheck file for this),
and then spellcheck it, taking the option to Add each unrecognized word as
it is queried.
Kludgy method, but works in almost any spellchecking app.

Regards,
Now for the Cruel Irony story: as a result of David's question, I was poking
about my own user word list and noticed it was rather small. Since I haven't
used it extensively since I created it, I decided to spell-check my original
list of words. Sure enough, a lot of words (hundreds, actually) were missing.
After some experiments, I've concluded that the size of a user word list is
limited without warning. The Spell Utility creates a file that is truncated,
but gives no sign that it has done so. Now I have to find the right newsgroup
to take this further. Meanwhile, I think I can solve the problem by creating a
bunch of smaller user lists... a royal pain and I don't know whether it works.
Next time I'll know to spell-check the source list as a test.

Up to you to judge what is 'a few'. Even 500 words would typically take only
5 minutes at most to accept into a new user dictionary, clicking one entry
per second or so.

Thanks for the alert on that. Worth looking out for.
Alex
Further to this, I searched www.deja.com for this topic and came up with a
post from--why, it's Alex Gray! He says that someone was trying to use user
word lists when a main word list is called for.
Sure enough, when I create a main word list from a Wordperfect file, I get way
better results. The truncating seems to have stopped, but there are still some
anomalies that I have to get around to investigating, but at least it's
progress. I hope David is still reading this.
This doesn't change the fact that the Spell Utility should warn you when it's
about to chop you off, something I consider a bug.
Thanks for your help, Alex.
