The problem is that now I can open a chapter, but it always
says,"C:\Data\Chapter..|....... .TXT" This file is invalid or has an
unsupported format" I hit OK, and then it says: The file named
"............... .txt" referenced in the chapter or publication you are
currently loading could not be found.". Then I hit OK and the chapter opens
with NO TEXT, but the figures are there. A few figures are missing, however.
Based on advice from Corel support in Canada, I did a: Start, Run, Winfile,
Okay, File, Associate. Then I type in .txt and curser down to and highlight
"Ventura Publication (C:\COREL50\PROG)" and then click on OK. Then I
rebooted (I am not sure if this was necessary). But it didn't help. The
problem still exists.
Another help source in Canada said to try to reinstall V5 once more and
under Custom Installation, be sure to select the file types that I needed.
It only allowed me to select "Filters", but no specific file types. Again,
this didn't help.
I ordered V8 this morning but they are out of stock and it will take up to 4
weeks to get it. And I have no idea if this same problem will exist with V8.
But now I am trapped for 4 weeks or more without any access to my
publication.
I would like to break this up into two problems: (1): What is causing the V5
to hang up so often without or without copying text from earlier in the
chapter? ______________. I now know that V5 was originally written for W95
and so that can be used as an excuse for too many things.
(2) How can I get my V5 to "reassociate" to the .txt and .wpd files in my
publication? ___________.
I can't image that I am the first one to experience this. There are probably
thousands of uses with V5 and W98. By now it should have a standard answer
(hopefully).
Any help, and the sooner the better, will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance,

That exact behaviour is why I avoided using V5. I found it most often occured
when editing tables.

Check the newsgroup and see how many V5 users there appear to be compared to
V8. There really aren't that many. V5 was so problematic that most users went
back to V4.1 or 4.2 and/or moved on the V7 and then V8 as soon as possible.

No, V5 was written for Win3.1. It was released in November of 1994, well
before Win95.
My recommendation is to upgrade to V8. (and no, I don't work for Corel)

Missed that. The only thing I can suggest is that you delete V5 completely and
reinstall. Since it is a 16bit app, there should be no registry entries to
worry about.
Also, instead of completely deleting V5 and then reinstalling it, I loaded
V5 (for the first time) onto another computer and then also loaded all my
data files on the other computer. But V5 still wouldn't recognize the .txt
files. Sincerely, Harvey Fiala

Sticky shift key. Should be F5.

The only time I have seen behavior such as you describe is when someone
changed the extension of a word processor file from DOC to TXT in the mistakne
belief that this would convert the file to ASCII. Or they edited an ASCII file
in a word processor, saved it as a word processor file but forced the TXT
extension.
Given your experience on different computer, are you sure this is not what has
happened?
