Record Locking Problem

Using Paradox 9 as a front end, and Oracle 8 as a back end, I'd be
extremely grateful if anyone out there could tell me how to lock
records so that when a second user tries to edit the same record, they
are told immediately that someone else is editing that record.

I've created a stock room inventory program using the above software,
along with using an alias set up in BDE Administrator/SQL Links. The
driver being used to connect from Paradox to Oracle is the "Native"
ORACLE driver that comes on the Paradox 9 disk.

The book I read said that Paradox locks records differently across the
network - when a person posts, unlocks, and moves off the record.
Meanwhile, someone else could have altered or deleted the record -
which you have to test for. I figured out a way to do this in the
"action" method, and it's okay, but not really what I want.

Before I created that method, though, if two people tried to edit the
same record at the same time, they could, but the person that saved
first would get to go his/her merry way, while the second user's
machine would completely freeze up to the point where they'd have to
use Control-Alt-Delete to get their machine back!!

I'd be extremely grateful if anyone would please write back if they
know the answer to this one!
