The following error message manifests when attempting a SP3 runtime install on a
NT machine:
"Your local system does not contain a valid version of Paradox 9
Runtime or Paradox 9 Distribution Expert. This service pack should only
be applied to either of these products."
and the installation terminates.
It goes without saying that there IS a valid runtime install on the machine.
Perhaps someone from the Corel InstallShield team could fill me in on what is
being looked for and how I can workaround.
Thanks,

Um, I though I saw several responses to the earlier postings. Did none of those
ideas help?
I've successfully installed both SP3's on a machine containing Pdx9, Pxr9, and
a PDE-based install of a Runtime9 application. Seemed to work just fine.
We're missing something...

Like John Beukema, I'm working with an NT machine, which I didn't make
clear before.
If the problem has been discussed, can you please provide some of the
thread subject titles? The situation is getting somewhat pressing.

I don't recall the thread names, but you should be able to find them using
deja.com's Power Search to search *paradox groups in the recent archive for
messages containing SP3 and Runtime as keywords.
hope this helps...

I reiterate my earlier request for what it is that the install is looking for. I
want to get a workaround ASAP.

I have Pdx9RT installed and patched with SP3 to 9.00.738 on my NT
Workstation (SP6a) here, without a problem. I have it installed to all
its default positions, excepting that the install drive is D: instead
of C:. Everything appears to work fine !.
Look in your HKEY_LOCAL hive of your registry. Under Software & Corel
you should find entries for both Paradox Distribution Expert and
Paradox Runtime, and a single entry "9.0" under each. Is there a
Destination and a SetupDirectory under each ?
In fact, could you possibly take a few minutes and copy out _all_ the
keys and their values for these two items, please, and send them to me?
Direct email is fine (mir...@voicenet.com), and probably easiest as a
set of screen captures (_please_ zipped !!!). I can take a look then
and see if you're just missing something that I can identify, and you
can easily replace it.

To find FAQs: group corelsupport.faqs.paradox on server cnews.corel.ca
" The knack to flying lies in learning the art of throwing
yourself at the ground ... and missing !"
I have looked at my machines here, however, and find that my testbed for
installations (P166 Win 98) has no HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Corel
entries. I have installed across the network from an Installshield Express
script modified from the one posted in the FAQ. My Program runs finebut SP3 will
not install here, either.
The Colorado site also was installed from IS. There seems to be a consistency
here. IS claims to have a reg merge module, but it seems to be lacking
cosiderable detail.
Borland BDE registry settings are complete however. In retrospect, this seems
right, as my copy of IS Express comes from a Delphi 4 installation which is not
concerned with Runtime, only the BDE. It may be that the base script contained
in the FAQ also derives from the Delphi version and omits the Paradox details.
I'll write more after I inspect the IS script.

Email me directly and I'll send you a copy of mine (if you can't read
the copy I posted yesterday) and, if you can fudge up an entry-set that
will work for you, I'll see about trying to write a form for the FAQs,
like I did for Standalone SP3
I modified the registry branch fragment to match my install and entered it
laboriously into the Installshield script. With the mysterious exception of the
Desktop key, all were entered appropriately in the register during the install
of my application.
After rebooting, I successfully applied SP3 Runtime patch.
I supect that the ParadoxDir and ParadoxLocalDir and perhaps the Destination
keys were the secret to applying the patch.
I will strip the IS script of my application-specific entries and provide it for
the InstallShield FAQ if you wish.
Thanks for all the fish!

Under separate cover is an InstallSheild script drived from Jack Wasserman's
contribution to the FAQs.
I have made many changes to it, largely a reorganization of file locations: ALL
of my file locations are in D:\Program Files\Corel\PDE\ and its subdirectories.
This solves some versioning problems caused by taking BDE files from the local
installation and combining them with the possibly upgraded Runtime files which
are a part of the PDE. I have also increased granularity in file groups and
installation components.
Included also are your successful recommendations for registry additions which
all seem to take except for the declared string for "Desktop", the absence of
which has made no difference in function in my distribution.
The instructions for use of the script will be different from those in the
current FAQ, but it can easily be puzzled out by someone familiar with IS.
It will be a week or two before I can schedule documentation.
I have successfully used this on Win 98 and 95 machines, not yet on NT or 2000.
Thanks for your guidance in resolving my dilemma and augmenting the script.

Resp'y Yrs,
Frederic G.
I couldn't make it work from within paradox, as if there are some restrictions
on modifying those specific keys while P9 runs. I made no attempt to isolate the
errors, choosing to go instead to a skeletal version of an Installshield script
as simpler for my remote clients. To be fair, I tested it under P9 Standard and
not Runtime.
I will apply myself to documenting that IS script this weekend.
